AIBU?

to think that there is NEVER an acceptable reason to call a 32 year old woman a "young girl?"

No I'm not.

I couldn't care less what emotive flannel is flung about.

IT. IS.NOT.ACCEPTABLE.

The end.

YANBU.

If I want to kid myself that I am still a young girl at 34, then you are just being mean to try and stop me.

So ner.

But I have a feeling our happy little consensus will be disturbed any moment now. :(

That was meant to be YABU. Blush

See! I still only have the sense of someone younger!

Hi Hully.

I don't feel as annoyed or whatever as you seem to, but I do wonder about it. I do think, whilst very kindly meant, it is patronising and therefore indicative of the fact that women are not taken a seriously as men.

But, in this instance, context is everything. Intent is everything, and the intent was to convey warmth. I can't really get that excited about it in this instance

We will have them with unassailable logic and reason and fight the forces of hogwash and flummery

I hate girl, it's so infantilising. Young, however, I will take in a heartbeat although at 39 it's been a while.

I get called 'lass' sometimes by people and I'm 59. Don't know what it is - maybe I seem a bit unsure about what I'm doing at the time or is it the way I speak?

I got called a 'young girl' the other day - I am 54 Grin.

My mother and her friends (all in their 80s) talk about their 'get-togethers for the girls' - have just bought them one of those rude cartoon cards 'girls just want to have fun' or similar !!

My mate's a physician and professor in her early 60's. She was in the corridor with her colleague, also a physician and mother of 6 in her mid-40's. A patient's parent walked by and said, 'Hi, girls!' They were not amused. :o

I fear I'm too tired for unassailable logic and reason. :( Couldn't we just ignore anybody who disagrees with us?

I wouldn't call a 32 yr old man a "young boy" to convey warmth.

Everyone would think I'd gone bonkers.

Let us be honest.

I'm 24 and got called young lady today (in a non patronising way) and I thought it was alright.

It's not that I'm really annoyed, although I am a bit, it's everyone saying it's all right that annoys me.

It's not all right. The context is irrelevant. It just isn't all right.

That does not take away in ANY WAY fromt eh terrible sadness of what happened to those two police officers.

You'd love Mark Kermode, then Hully. When someone referred to his wife as Mrs Kermode" he asked, "do you mean Dr Williams?". Mmmmm men like that make me happy.

YANBU. I do wonder whether there is a regional thing going on though. It might be more acceptable in some parts of the country in a colloquial situation. It should never be used in professional context IMO.

Male officers might get called lads.
