I don't feel as annoyed or whatever as you seem to, but I do wonder about it. I do think, whilst very kindly meant, it is patronising and therefore indicative of the fact that women are not taken a seriously as men.

But, in this instance, context is everything. Intent is everything, and the intent was to convey warmth. I can't really get that excited about it in this instance

I got called a 'young girl' the other day - I am 54 .

My mother and her friends (all in their 80s) talk about their 'get-togethers for the girls' - have just bought them one of those rude cartoon cards 'girls just want to have fun' or similar !!

My mate's a physician and professor in her early 60's. She was in the corridor with her colleague, also a physician and mother of 6 in her mid-40's. A patient's parent walked by and said, 'Hi, girls!' They were not amused. :o

YANBU. I do wonder whether there is a regional thing going on though. It might be more acceptable in some parts of the country in a colloquial situation. It should never be used in professional context IMO.
