Kindle rage

Got a kindle last summer to take on holiday. When I got back the screen broke (it wasn't damaged or anything, just wouldn't switch on one day). I phoned Amazon and they sent me a replacement - great.

I've been using it on and off all year and I just took it on holiday again - once again the screen went. I phoned Amazon and because it is now just out of warranty they can't replace it for me, just offer a discount on another one. The warranty is a year from the purchase of the first kindle rather than the replacement which means this kindle has lasted less than a year.

Is it reasonable to expect something like this to last more than a year? And would I be stupid to buy another one, even at a discount price, when it's pretty likely to break again?

I absolutely agree. I had the same problem - just put of warranty. They would let me buy another for £60 (I have the keyboard version) - but with only a 3 month warranty. I can buy a new non - keyboard version for £70 with a years warranty ...

Can you not claim through your holiday insurance ?

My insurance has an excess of £50 so hardly worth it..

Have you pointed that out to them? I would, I have found them very reasonable (and they replaced my kindle twice, even though the second time I had sat on it)

If it's just the screen not switching on have you tried doing a soft reboot thing with it? Mine has moments where it refuses to work or jams and a soft reboot usually does the trick :)

Were you still in warranty though Exit? You get a very different experience of customer service if you're not..

I've tried the soft reboot, thanks though.

I'm really surprised by this, they've replaced my dm's twice with no issues. Maybe call again, perhaps you got someone on an off day?

Thanks everyone - I was phoning from abroad so kept it brief - I will have another try tomorrow.

My ds-i-l had had his for just over a year when my dd dropped it and broke the screen. All they offered was a 20% reduction on a new one [which they accepted as the fault was dd's for dropping it].

I think so, but my friend had one replaced out of warranty, she argued the sale of goods act (that it should reasonably be expected to last longer than a year)

Also, I too was abroad, but used the live chat facility online and they called me back to talk further, so no call charges at all. They couldn't have been more helpful.

It happened to me too, at 19 months old. They offered me 20% off a new one too. I hadn't done anything to make it happen, one day it got lines on the screen, the next day it froze. Have googled it a bit and I think it is a common problem. I suspect that they were replacing loads and loads of them so they are not as kind as they once were out of warranty.
I am gutted about mine, I miss it, but I don't want to buy a new kindle every year and a half!!

So what happens when you replace a Kindle? Does it automatically download all the Kindle books you ever bought? And do your "Clippings" also come back?

My kindle froze completely, suddenly. Rang them and went through all the turning it on and of etc., that I had already done.

Said I would have to buy a new one, and due to the circumstances they would offer me a 20% discount on a new one, which I accepted. Then get an e mail after I bought it saying I had to send my broke one back, or I would lose the 20% discount.

Being the mardy cow I am, and just having recently had a huge issue with a merchant on Amazon and trying to get a refund on that which involved me emailing the CEO in a fit of PMT induced rage (although I got my refund and the same value in amazon gift vouchers thanks to that), I rang them back asking why I needed to send it back. They said it was in the terms and conditions of the warranty and I had to send it back, they could not seem to get my point that

  1. it was out of warranty as it was 18 months old hence why they would not replace
  2. they can not start adding conditions onto the discount after they have already got my money.

and 3. If I HAD to send it back, as they were saying I HAD to, then it had never been mine, just a damn rental!

Same thing happened to me. I bought it in July 2011 and it froze in May 2012. I couldn't restart it, so I returned it for another one. A month later (before my warranty ended) it happened again so I am now onto my third one.

I mentioned to the Advisor that if something happens to Kindle Number Three within a year, I expect it to be covered under a warranty. She said she'd put a note on my details and they will sort it out if and when it comes to it.

Cote- you have to re-register your Kindle, then redownload everying the the 'archive' section.

I'm really shocked that they think a year is all the lifespan we should expect from a kindle. Tellybug's link is really good, but it does seem you have to fight to get your rights under the sale of goods act. I don't think anyone should be willing to pay for a new one after only a couple of years. Unless you spilt gin on it or something.

had mine for ages now (two years) and taken it camping and trekking in a waterproof bag... it's still going strong (touch wood) and i LOVE it for travelling - i can have a rough guide and a whole fortnight of books on it rather than pushing the baggage limits on teh plane!

I loved mine to and am gutted. I'm particularly upset that the replacement didn't have a year's warranty as I would've been just inside it. I had just spent quite a bit downloading all my holiday books as well and now can't read the buggers!
