Just come back from a good friends' wedding. Small main wedding (close family only) but big evening reception she held at home in her garden. about 100 there (brave but she has a big house and a big garden hog roast/buffet ). There was a "bar" set up in the utility room with a friend's older student daughters serving drinks. Bride had been to drinks wholesalers and bought cheap beer wine and cider and some soft drinks. Aibu to consider it a bit Shock to be expected to pay for a drink? Apart from the fact she had no licence, this was in her home. She is not short of a bob or two either. Worse, her new dh was saying that they expect to make money on the bar!

Hmm that does seem a bit tight - especially the making money bit

Plus, illegal. You need a licence to sell alcohol

Yanbu at all. That is awful. Yes I would expect to pay for drinks at a formal licences venue, but not the set up you described. Very rude and cheeky

Making money off your friends at your wedding and making a point of telling people you're hoping for a profit?? Shock

Would this be typical behaviour for your good friends?

Hmm.
Not nice at all, but 100 people can fairly pack away a fair lot of drink. Would've been nicer for everyone to put a few pound in a kitty - just a nominal amount to take the sting out of the drinks bill if necessary.
Even that would raise eyebrows, but it would be less cringey overall than charging for each drink

They are really actually good friends of DH...tbh as if taxi would entertain such tightwaddedness.

If you're having a party at your house and you can't afford to stump up the booze (fair enough) then you tell guests to bring their own.

You don't open some sort of illegal drinking den and boast about making a profit.

Yanbu! That is awful!
I think I'd have been tempted to leave early, or at least go out to buy my own. Even if it had cost me more to do so in taxi fares.

Apart from it being illegal, I can't believe anyone would be so crass. They could have paid to have a pay bar if they'd have wanted to.
