Set a good example to the kids Wiggins and put your helmet on!

Well done though, great race!

Jury's out on whether they actually make cycling any safer or not.

So, YABU.

Ps. Have recorded the race, so will leave the thread for now for fear of spoilers!

A helmet saved the life of a family friend. The doctors said he would, without a doubt, be brain dead if he hadn't had one on (he got hit by a car). He was in a coma for about 36 hours.

As a whole helmet compulsion is a bad thing for the population (although helmets may help slightly in some specific cases)

The point is that wearing a helmet makes you much less likely to be involved in an accident in the first place.

(knew I wouldn't be able to stay away!)

yabu, makes small difference whilst slowly patrolling the crowd given what he does for a living (ordinary cycle helmets not any protection on 60mph descents).

CakeMeIAmYours · 01/08/2012 16:18

Much more likely

He wasn't doing a 60mph descent though DontEat. He had finished by this point but was cycling to see the crowds. Slower pace.

YABtotallyU - he wore it all the way round, that's a good enough example to set.
He's not going to be hit by a car on a wee pootle to say thanks to the crowd and go to the podium.

Oh for goodness sake, are you serious? He's scanning the crowd for his family not coming down from the Ventoux.

YABU - he was going so slowly that if he did fall off it would be like a tiny wobble and it is highly unlikely that he would hit his head.

However, whats this about the jury being out about cycle helmets not being safe? MIL got hit by a car whilst on her bike and was told that her injuries would have been far far worse had she not been wearing a helmet.

Do you mean when he was pedalling slowly after the race? In which case yabu. I bet he was desperate to get it off and cool down.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine I don't see how it's bad for the population. While I agree wrapping kids in cotton wool is uncessary and damaging, I don't think wearing a helmet when riding on a road is damaging (completely the opposite). Would you say the same about a helmet for a motorcyclist or a horse rider. In facts let's forget any safety gear.

Going slow doesn't mean you can't fall off.

WONT SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!

They do a lot of good if you do fall/crash but they also mean drivers treat cyclists with less care (as they view them as less vunerable) and allow them less room.

I was about to say 'duh, what was that shiny red object he had strapped to his bonce then?' but I see you're on about after the race while he's pootling along, in which case YABU and a bit ridiculous to bring it up really.

Helmet compulsion is bad for population as where there is compulsion cycling drops leading to an increase in obesity etc.

As I already said helmets may be useful in certain circumstances.
