to be really annoyed about scented Always pads?

I’ve used Always since they first came out in the UK (waaaay back when) and always (sorry) been happy with them. They were a revelation after the inch-thick leaky horrors of my early teens. Anyway, I notice they are now only available scented – at least the ones I use (Night – for those heavy heavy times). WHY???? Not only do I really dislike the heavy implication that a) my fanjo smells terrible and b) I don’t know to wash myself and wear clean underwear, but the smell makes me heave - it’s like the worst elements of synthetic old-lady and teenager perfumes mixed together – and I really don’t want to stick chemicals right on my most sensitive part. Bought some last month because I hadn’t realised they were scented, and while I can almost never smell my own period I can constantly smell the stupid scent.

Thanks a bunch Always angry I shall be switching to Boots’ own brand from now on (until they become bloody scented as well)

And you joined to drag up a 3 year old thread to say that?

FlickfromEarlsfield Wed 05-Aug-15 09:20:19

Anything that is scented has endocrine disrupting chemicals in it, so is therefore bad for you!

monkeynuts123 Sun 23-Jun-13 21:22:49

And they make my arse sore, always!

Like the first poster I have been an early Always user till they added their 'fresh pearl' (they don't call it a scent). That induced a massive (and unpleasant) contact allergy. I wrote to P&G to moan and they sent me a list of their products that have no beads or perfume. Basically the Silk one (black packets) are like the old Always.

My local Lidl has Siempre (I.e. the Euro version of "Always") for sale which doesn't have the stinky pearls added. I buy the tampons which are fine, they stock pads as well.

MamaChubbyLegs Tue 11-Jun-13 08:07:41

(When I say "they work for me", I mean their primary purpose mopping up and hiding my period, not prettifying my fanny)

MamaChubbyLegs Tue 11-Jun-13 08:05:19

Mehh... it's just a gimmick to draw in people who are aleady paranoid about having a smelly period fanny. Some people are. Some people need to twee-ify their natural functions. I know people like this. They aren't going to change, much like most of us aren't going to stop seeing sense! I agree with whoever said they smell like an old lady handbag though grin

If you don't want the chemicals, buy something else. They work for me, so I use them. I even used them post partum with a nasty tear (I know right? Naaawty! Maternity towels are fucking horrible bunchy stitch splitting bastard knicker logs ) My fanny didn't fall off.

I know the implication that we are manky when we menstruate is massively offensive, but I honestly don't think it's meant like that. It's just a gimmick to draw in those who already think periods are manky. That's their problem

This thread explains a lot of my past foof issues. And there's been a lot. angryblush

Ill be sticking with morrisons own and the occasional lil-lets whenever they being out fancy packaging to keep them in. With drawstring ribbons and everything!

I think having to go around smelling like an air freshener is worse than the smell of blood which is not so bad as long as pads are changed regularly. Surely Always sales figures must have dropped lately as so many people seem to have stopped buying them because of the smell?

LeoandBoosmum Tue 11-Jun-13 00:31:18

Bodyform with wings are really great, far better than any of Always. You can also buy a really nice natural brand in Boots called Cottons (I think). They are in a cream wrapper with green writing. Work really well. I think fragrance in any form near the lady garden is a bad idea!

NameChangeFoSho Tue 11-Jun-13 00:28:10

Not sure if anyone even cares but I've just checked mine and they do make them without the pearls so if you don't want a stinky minky, just buy the ones without!

Gossipmonster Tue 11-Jun-13 00:21:57

honeytea your post made me cry laughing smile

WhirlyByrd Tue 11-Jun-13 00:14:00

Well why don't we all complain to Always? I am quite depressed at the messages that are being sent out to girls and young women. Apparently as well as removing all trace of hair, spending hours grooming themselves to look like porn stars, womn are now supposed to smell like a glade air freshener. hmm you can bet your bottom dollar that men won't be getting jizz-freshener anytime soon.

corblimeymadam Mon 10-Jun-13 23:54:25

Message withdrawn at poster's request.

NameChangeFoSho Mon 10-Jun-13 23:50:19

But they still make them without the smell don't they? I'm sure the ones I use don't have the active pearls.

MadameOvary Mon 10-Jun-13 23:22:51

Just adding my voice to the thread. I used to use Always nighttime too. Not any more. They are rank. angry

Onesleeptillwembley Mon 10-Jun-13 23:10:17

I agree, who on earth would imagine a woman needs a scented foof plug? Bloosy ridiculous idea. Mumsnet campaign?

Crouchendmumoftwo Mon 10-Jun-13 23:06:06

The main problem is the itch of the stuff. It has made my fanjo itch like crazy so much so that I cannot use them very often. It was driving me insania until I realised the whiff of chemical perfume or something!

emanjay Mon 10-Jun-13 22:17:55

So angry with the manufacturer. I have had several courses of antibiotics for what I thought was cystitis and it was actually caused by these pads. Thats about £22 wasted on unnecessary medicine!! They have ignored my e mail which makes me even more angry!!

BlackStiltonBoots Mon 10-Jun-13 21:41:43

I had to use some of the always ultra pads recently, my god the itching, burning feeling was horrendous and I had to wear one overnight as the shop was closed. They stank like artificial flowery air freshener too, bleurgh.

I emailed them to complain and they told me that the pads were not scented but that the actipearls neutralise odour by covering it up with headache inducing chemical smell and this may be what I could smell confused.

Thankfully I now have my mooncup, so won't be using their vile, itchy, rash inducing, pongy pads of distress again!

NutcrackerFairy Mon 10-Jun-13 21:05:00

I am quite confused at this thread...

I use Always Ultra with Wings and think they are pretty good - absorbent and don't move around, comfortable to wear...

I hadn't really noticed any 'eau de old granny', haven't had a burning fanny, no blisters, no thrush...

I think the Active Pearls or whatever they're called do seem to reduce the smell of old blood [and yes I do change SP regularly but sometimes have noticed that menstrual blood gets a little whiffy, sorry if tmi...]

And I can offer get them quite cheap on offer in the supermarket.

So yes, I've been happy with them really.

shock at how many of you have issues with them though, some of which sound quite serious - infected Bartholin's Cyst WTAF!

hollyisalovelyname Mon 10-Jun-13 20:28:22

Looks like Always have lost a lot of customers!

trinity0097 Mon 10-Jun-13 20:25:30

It's the panty liners too, took me about a week to realise it was them rather than me having a weird infection (even took a canisten pill to be on the safe side).

I found some asda ones that are about the same size (large ones) and unscented, but not as happy with the quality (not as much of the backing is sticky so they bunch up a bit during the day) - I haven't found unscented all days anywhere to buy - has anyone else seen any???

meditrina Mon 10-Jun-13 20:21:29

It may be a zombie thread, but I'll just add that I'm another customer that Always have lost. unfortunately, Ocado didn't make it clear enough that the 'bought before' product had had a major change.

I've switched to Bodyform now - and discovered that they're better and cheaper. And don't have itch-producing vile smell.

I wonder how much market share Always have lost in recent months?
