AIBU?

To be furious with sports directs refund policy??

So today I went to sports direct with a friend and our children. Shop was hot and packed and I was looking for a waterproof jacket since I have now bought a bike through work to cycle and cut costs. Df's dd starts crying and soon enough DS is bored and tired chimes in too. So hot, flustered and feeling the pressure I grabbed the only one I could find after circling twice and bought it for £29.99. I really can't afford to be spending that kind of money and felt v guilty. After lunch I went back it was less busy so I got help and found one for £14.99. I went to refund and was told store policy was to not give cash back but a gift voucher! Wtf!? Who do they think they r?????? If I knew I would have never made such an impulsive decision or even bought from them now I have a £15 voucher I definitely don't want to use and sitting between wanting to cry or sending an email to customer service and tell them they are fucking c

They don't have to refund you just because you changed your mind.
It's not great PR for the store admittedly and many places will just give you your money back, but it's goodwill if the only reason is you changed your mind, which in your case it was.

They don't legally even have to give you a voucher.

You can only get a refund for faulty goods, not because you are indecisive. They didn't legally have to give you anything.

Sorry but I'm afraid any refunds for goods that are not actually faulty are at the shop's discretion. Appreciate you are fed up but they are within their rights.

But you just changed your mind - there wasn't anything wrong with the original item. They didn't have to exchange it at all, or offer you vouchers. This a normal policy as far as I'm concerned,

Didn?t you notice the MASSIVE sign at the till saying ?no cash refunds?

Sorry - cross posted with everyone else.

Being devil's advocate though, why should they have to give a refund because you changed your mind? The item wasn't faulty so they are technically under no obligation even to exchange it.

It isn't their fault you went shopping with friend and children and got flustered and calling them fing c*s for not giving you your own way makes you sound a really delightful person btw.

It's not their fault you impulsed bought. Their refund policy is quite clear in the store at the tills and the back of the receipt.

But unless the garment is not fit for purpose then you don't really have a right to a cash refund.

YANBU Unfortunately they are legally allowed to do this. The law states that unless an item is faulty they do not have to refund the item. And IF they do they can issue a credit note.
However most stores I have dealt with value their customers more and refund with cash / electronically back to your card.
My friend had similar happen to her and she was not impressed.

Is there anyone you could give the voucher to? Someone who is sports mad and needs new footie boots / trainers etc?

Everyone else is right, but just looking at the bigger picture, have you got any birthdays coming up that you could give the voucher as a present for?

Scholes34 · 09/06/2012 19:37

My two boys will need new football boots at the end of August.
I'm sure there are plenty of people you know also in this position who would happily make use of your voucher.

If you're feeling generous, you could just send the voucher direct to me.

Sports direct generally have very clear notices near the till detailing their refund policy.

You can't buy something and then expect a full refund because you decide you should have got a cheaper one.

It's your fault you grabbed one and then decided you wanted a cheaper one. There's nothing wrong with the coat.

Tbh I never knew that they don't have to accept returns. I did sort of guess they didn't have to give me cash back but they are the only high street brand I have come across who have this policy it is terrible customer service I don't shop much and consequently don't refund much so seeing how common knowledge this seems to be i guess IWBU. I wouldn't call anyone a c* and never have but I'm just so upset at the situation

Ah, OP.
I can see your frustration if you didn't understand.
But forthwith, you won't be surprised by this again and at least you now know that you should check refund policies.

Can you sell it to anybody who you know might use it?

I'm going to try will send an email around work and see if anyone will kindly buy it off me

They are arseholes - especially the arsehole in charge of it all. Ask any Newcastle fan...

But they are perfectly within their rights to have that policy.

I have always found their customer service to be very good both in store and online.

You can't blame the store if people decide they don't want things anymore as they want to spend less money.

Report
AlbertoFrog · 09/06/2012 20:10

Bought two t-shirts there yesterday and the girl on the till actually told me they didn't do cash refunds.

Most stores will offer cash refunds within a certain time period but it is purely discretionary - unless goods are faulty you are not entitled to your money back.

I can understand you being frustrated if you didn't know this but I don't think this is worth crying over (or name calling). Hope you get the voucher sold on.

YABU

Next time if you are out and find yourself getting hot and bothered why not ask your friend to take the kids outside? I do understand how difficult it is to shop when the kids are creating.

While you arent keen on them right now, when your DS reaches the age where his feet burst through trainers like a werewolf's you might be grateful of them!

TBH you did actually get good customer service because when you asked, a member of staff took you to some cheaper coats.
