to be shocked that checkout staff at Lidl are pushing the Health Lottery??

I popped into Lidl this morning to pick up a few bits a pieces and was quite shocked to hear the checkout operator say to the woman in front iof me: "Would you like a ticket for the Health Lottery with that?".

When she said: "No thanks", the operator said: "But, its only a pound and you might win £50."

The woman bought the ticket.

When my turn came, I was asked the same question, to which I replied: "No, and I don't think you should be pushing these tickets at the checkout. The Health Lottery poster you have up there clearly shows a GambleAware logo and your actions are going against that."

She just ignored me and took the money and probably carried on asking everyone who came after me.

I think its wrong. If people choose to walk into a shop and buy a ticket, then fair enough, but Lidl staff shouldn't be persuading people to gamble.

Am I unreasonabe?

If you have a problem with it, talk to the manager or take it to head office. The poor woman on the checkout was doing exactly as she was told to do, she doesn't need you berating her as well.

Of course she carried on offering other customers the tickets, why would she stop just because you made a bit of a fuss? She's just doing her job.

I smirk at the title "Health Lottery". If I buy a ticket, can I win access to my GP, an NHS dentist, all the cancer/alzheimers treatment should I need it, free IVF treatment should I need it, decent midwifery services, maternity wards that are not full...

YABU for having a go at the poor woman, she was just doing her job. You seem a little dense for not realising this.

She won't have a choice. She isn't deciding to do this, you know.

She will have been told. By her employers. That she must do this.

She isn't going to stop because you have had a go at her. She's not going to be the one in charge of the decision to ask each customer. And, frankly, you having a go at her is unfair. Ask for the manager and have a go at them, if you feel very strongly about it.

It's not her fault what her boss is telling her to ask the customers. And she will get into trouble if she doesn't ask it.

My DH worked in m&s for years and used to get people like you having a go at him for offering credit cards and cut price chocolate oranges. But if he didn't do it and he was caught by a secret shopper he faced getting the sack.

I don't really see what your problem with this is in the first place, but if you really object to it then you should contact the management, not get shitty with the poor bugger sat there earning naff all who doesn't control decisions like this.

You realise you didn't have to buy if you didn't want to?
And the person in front of you had a mind of her own
And she would be happy if she won?

And you telling the minimum wage prob bored out of her mind checkout person about gamble aware made you look like a bit of a twat tbh?

just say no thanks and let the woman do her job

What do you think she gets out of it?

She is made to do it. In the same way that when I worked at New Look about 12 years ago I had to push the store cards, not because I wanted people to get into debt but because I was told I needed to ask every customer.

It's not funny. One of those cards could lead to a spiral of debt and despair, alcoholism. An appearance on Kyle.

I thought the Health Lottery was something that the media banged on about regularly, you know how on one side of the street you can get life-saving cancer drugs, and on the other you're left to die on a ward with no treatment, in agony Confused

Is it really a proper, gambling-type lottery? How have I missed this?!
