I only have one aunt and uncle, who gave me two cousins. Both cousins are married. One with 2 very small children (3 & 9 months). The other, A, is married to S. We have always been fairly close. A and S lead busy lifestyles but don't have children (sadly not through lack of trying). Due to their busy lifestyles, they have "forgotten" to send Christmas & Birthday cards to myself, my mum and my brother for 3 or 4 years. We have always sent to them but never got a thank you. Shock horror. The postman today has brought me a christmas card from A&S! I open it. It's handmade so clearly they aren't as busy this year as normal. I start reading. WTF they have spelt my name wrong. Seriously? They have spelt it the boys way.

I'm fuming. I know this is such a minor issue but finally after 3 or 4 years I actually get a card, and they spell my name wrong. They know full well how it is spelt.

seriously? Does it matter? Some people have bad spelling. My best friend spells my son's name wrong even though shes seen it written down loads of times, but it doesn't matter!!!!!!

I think a handmade card sounds lovely :-)

They clearly don't know full well how it's spelt unless you think they purposely made you a card and misspent your name to upset which I think is very unlikely. Perhaps your cousin's husband wrote them all as he has better handwriting and made a mistake? People do.

It wouldnt really bother me especially as they had sent a homemade card which requires particular effort.

Bloody hell if that's all you've got to whinge about...

I'm crap at sending cards, some people I don't send cards too anyway (my cousins children (I am 1 of 15 cousins)) but they continue to send.

They have put time and effort into getting a beautiful card, not everyone has perfect spelling.

Do you think they mis-spelt your name deliberately? Why not accept it was a mistake and appreciate the thoughtful card?
My family are big on cards, for any random ocassion. My SIL thinks this is hilarious and a waste of money - so when we do get a card from her it feels even more special.

I've just got a card from my SIL, whom I love dearly.
She's finally spelling my DD's name right after 20 years, but has given my DS a completely different name that doesn't even begin with the same letter.
We thought it was funny.
But go ahead and feel affronted, it's what many other people's Christmases are made of I find, the ability to get angry over minutia.

Disown them immediately and encourage the rest of your family to do so to.They are clearly evil. Xmas Hmm

My brother frequently spells dds and my name wrong. My brother. He is a shit speller but a lovely brother so i couldnt give a toss.

I always wrestle with Lesley/Leslie - which is the boys way? which is the girls way? Maybe it's a name like that and they didn't do it on purpose?

My mum and dad have been married for about 30 years. My dad's sisters and mum have spelled my mum's name wrong on every xmas and b'day card she's ever received from them. We do wonder if they look at the cards she sends them and think 'I wonder why she spelled her name that way?' Grin

Your cousins won't have meant to offend you - they handmade you a card (probably 1 of 10? 20?) and wrote it - possibly in a hurry and with 2 small children to look after. YABU and need to be grateful they sent anything at all!

Really?

My own mother has always misspelt my children's names. It's sort of a tradition to have a laugh about it.

Other times I've been married off to men of different names (by card-writers, not wedding celebrants)

I think maybe you're getting a teensy bit overwrought about this

WorraLiberty · 20/12/2011 09:41

And maybe they spent the last 3 or 4 years making the card.....

Exactly like that, Vivi! Xmas Grin

As a teacher, if I ripped up every card that has my name mis-spelt by parents, I'd have very few left. Despite wearing my name on my chest whilst at work, and it being on the door and in various other places.
The intention was good, it's what I focus on.

FFS. How depressing that there are people who can react like this to a misspelt name. YABVVVU

On sunday, I wrote something like 120 cards, including the ones to close family. It was a nightmare task, and it is perfectly possible that I made a mistake with someone's name during it - not on purpose, but just because I was so mind-numbed by the task. I hope that none of the recipients would complain about a simple and genuine mistake.

Are you a Lesley or an Ashleigh? Xmas Grin
We've had at least 6 variations on my no4 son's name on his cards this year, possibly more, I haven't looked at the last batch... chill.

My aunt has spelt my name wrong on every single birthday and christmas card she has ever sent me. Its not a difficult name , just has two alternate spellings and despite me (obviously) spelling it right on the ones I send her, its always wrong. Mildly irksome but not really something to flounce about! Spell her's wrong next year if you really want to make a point.
