I went to a supermarket today beginning with the letter "W". Before you all turn me into ash I usually shop at Tesco but DM is coming at the weekend and I am trying to make an effort.

Park in P and C space. Unloading bits and then posh woman with baby says "oh you are not going to take that trolley are you?" I didn't hear at first so she repeated. Looked and in front of my car was one of those shallow trolleys. I would have liked it but I said no of course, she could have it.

She then engaged me in conversation, said she didn't want to unload her baby son from car seat to buggy, hassle, I agreed. She then watched whilst I unloaded my change bag (Pacapod, spent a bit on it as couldn't afford new buggy) and said "I have one of those, they are great aren't they, only trouble is my son has cloth nappies and I just couldn't fit them into the bag" at which point I switch off and say "perhaps use disposables then"

At which point she looked at me horrified.

I couldn't help but chuckle.

AIBU?

Not exactly BU - just a little scary. She probably hadn't spoken to another adult in days and was just trying to be pleasant but getting it a bit wrong.

What was funny? I use reusables a lot and Pacapods are actually very small for their size iyswim. She was just trying to make conversation surely?

You were pretty short with her. What was so amusing about the incident?

Gosh, you sound delightful OP. Did you have an issue with the woman because she was 'posh', because she shopped at Waitrose, because she cares enough about the environment to use cloth nappies or because you have a large chip on your shoulder?

Posh people aren't allowed to say anything really are they? YABU! But its hard to tell as the tone in which the above conversation took place could make you not unreasonable at all.

Yes yabu, she was just being friendly. Sounds like you have a chip on your shoulder because she was 'posh' Xmas Hmm

Was it her supposed horror at using disposables? I would suggest maybe you came across as dismissive and sharp as you have in here? She was prob just hoping for some inane friendly chat. I'm not great at making conversation, so if I had done this and you cut me down I'd probably have looked at you in horror/surprise too.
