Just watching the series on Channel 4 - maybe we can learn a thing or two from them?

I would quite like it, I think, but who knows what happens behind closed doors, eh?

On the face of it, they seem very well adjusted, good family relations, good work ethic ...

I live in an Amish community/had Amish friends...what I know would put you off for life.

It is not at all like you imagine.

Oh, Feminine, we were lusting after a simpler, more wholesome way of life, then... Spill!

I always fancied it too. Quilting of an evening with my fellow Amish sisters...comparing bonnets and scrubbing manure off my husbands boots.

I really did fancy it. Seems simple....

Many Amish run cruel puppy farms.

I am going to get MN HQ to get rid of my posts...its just something I know ,but prob shouldn't share (as not all communities are the same) Blush

I have a big mouth.

Oh i am fascinated by those programmes on the Amish - its a shame you feel you cant speak out - i dont think all communities are the same but its still interesting to hear about how insular they can be?

One thing I will add, is that our local library is running computer classes just for the Amish and ...many of them carry cell phones.

So the lack of technology is one ye ole myth you can cross off Grin

Feminine it seems that this article kind of backs up what you are saying. Its really interesting reading. www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/2008/07/15/escaping-the-amish-part-1/

Yes according to the above article you can go to hell if you have a phone in the house (but you can have one in the barn) Hmm

The kids who featured the channel 4 documentary all seemed like really nice fairly well adjusted people, the Amish community is very big and i guess that if there are any problems that they are more likely to keep it to themselves.

Thank you so much rosie yep ...the article is (from what I quickly glanced at) very accurate.

What I was trying to say actually :)

Thanks for the link ~ I'm going back to it later!

Its like the car thing too ...many folk (round here) have a wonderful side job , ferrying the Amish about...

Its alright to ride in one (if you need to get somewhere badly enough) Wink

They do keep problems to themselves ...very true , plus many of them would have no way to escape even if they wanted to.

I understand why you would consider it, it seems like a wonderful life.
I hated the fact they told one of the girls she would burn in hell if she doesn't choose where to send her soul Sad
