Sorry, but I think that's awful and in very poor taste.

As a matter of interest, OP, why do you think that is such a good ad?

Report
cocoachannel · 30/11/2011 18:07

OP, are you South African? I just ask because perhaps it has different resonance for its intended audience.

Having said that, I have seen a few people share it on facebook, so some people must enjoy it, but it's not my cup of peri peri sauce.

ps. I'm a little disappointed this isn't a review of the ads of the year thread, a little early. I was coming on the thread to nominate Barnardo's.

Did no-one read one of the comments from a black Zimbabwean who thought this was wonderful and exactly the kind of thing Mugabe would ban!

Perhaps you might like to explain, SP, why you think this is so funny?

I think some of the advert is lost in the fact that it is South African and Mugabe is HATED there. It is a Pro-Democracy Anti-Dictator ad. I love it for that reason.

The 45-second TV advert, called ?Last dictator standing?, originates from Nando's in South Africa and opens with a Robert Mugabe lookalike wistfully picking up a Colonel Gaddafi place card from an empty dinner table. In a dream sequence he is then met by the deceased Libyan dictator who starts a waterfight with a golden AK-47.

Mugabe is then seen frolicking with Saddam Hussein, South African apartheid leader P W Botha and former Ugandan president Idi Amin before the dream sequence cuts out. Nando?s 6-pack meal is then advertised in its place. With the voice over saying "No one should have to eat alone at Christmas".

I think the message is that Mugabe's days are numbered, and he now no longer has the allies he once had. That's a good message to me. Its mocking him for 'having to eat alone'.

The lyrics of the song add to it. Those were the days written by Dolly Parton. "Those were the days my friend, We thought they'd never end, We'd sing and dance forever and a day, We'd live the life we chose, We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way"

Its all about the end of an era and mocking the dictators.

I'm sure a lot of people think its in very poor taste. I think its a way of ridiculing horrific men and belittling them and taking the fear they had for years - thats something that is empowering to anyone who has lived under their rule for many years. You either laugh or your cry.

Bit like the T-shirt with 'Rob Mugabe..' and a picture of him on the front - with 'before he robs you' on the back ....

Just African 'humour' I suppose .... Grin

Nope. Sorry. Still don't think it's funny. (And I did understand the message).

Why is it funny for you, SEA?

Not sure its just african humour tbh.

DH, being mature as ever (rolls eyes), created a twitter account called Colin Gadaffi to mock him. I wasn't too impressed with him for it. He used it to make both jokes when everything kicked off there and to make poignant comments on the subject. I thought it was in poor taste... until he started getting loads of Libyans, both exiled and in Libya, following him and thanking him for supporting their cause and bringing attention to it. He had some pretty emotional and moving messages actually. I think humour definitely has its place on this subject... even if its not always to my taste.

Because A) It's taking the absolute mick out of current and previous dictators and B) because it's exactly the type of thing Mugabe would ban

What NiceyNice said! :o

I think it's fabulous, personally. Would rather watch that than be subjected to the Toys R Us jingle!
