I think some of the advert is lost in the fact that it is South African and Mugabe is HATED there. It is a Pro-Democracy Anti-Dictator ad. I love it for that reason.
The 45-second TV advert, called ?Last dictator standing?, originates from Nando's in South Africa and opens with a Robert Mugabe lookalike wistfully picking up a Colonel Gaddafi place card from an empty dinner table. In a dream sequence he is then met by the deceased Libyan dictator who starts a waterfight with a golden AK-47.
Mugabe is then seen frolicking with Saddam Hussein, South African apartheid leader P W Botha and former Ugandan president Idi Amin before the dream sequence cuts out. Nando?s 6-pack meal is then advertised in its place. With the voice over saying "No one should have to eat alone at Christmas".
I think the message is that Mugabe's days are numbered, and he now no longer has the allies he once had. That's a good message to me. Its mocking him for 'having to eat alone'.
The lyrics of the song add to it. Those were the days written by Dolly Parton. "Those were the days my friend, We thought they'd never end, We'd sing and dance forever and a day, We'd live the life we chose, We'd fight and never lose For we were young and sure to have our way"
Its all about the end of an era and mocking the dictators.
I'm sure a lot of people think its in very poor taste. I think its a way of ridiculing horrific men and belittling them and taking the fear they had for years - thats something that is empowering to anyone who has lived under their rule for many years. You either laugh or your cry.
