AIBU?

to think that I should be able to inconvenience other drivers?!

By pulling on to my own driveway? Grrrrrrr.

I live on a main road, and have a driveway which happens to be pretty narrow. This means I have to slow down to almost a stop, and do a wide sweeping turn into it (due to their often being parked cars). Having lived here for 3 1/2 years, I have had no problems with this, except for twice in the last 6 months, I have been beeped at by the driver behind me for daring to do such a thing! I even had one try to come along my left hand side mounting the kerb to try and pass me!!! Good job I am vigilant with my mirrors prior to turning the wheel!

Tonight someone beeped again, and I felt like getting out and asking them exactly how they would like me to drive so as not to inconvenience them for more than 2 seconds. Grrrrrr.

I slow down, position the car in the correct position to allow me to complete the turn as quick as possible, signal in plenty of time... so what is wrong with people?!

YANBU but would it not be easier to come at it from the other direction rather than having to swing wide

They are obviously so much more important than you, that the 2 second delay will force them to spontaneously combust. Not really they are just impatient nobjockeys.

No patience! Where I used to live I had to put the hazard lights on (was just after a left turn) was made worse as I had to wait for the (very slow moving) gate to open.

Just practice your sweetest smile Grin

Do you really need to pull out wide to get in? I thought that was only necessary if you have a very long vehicle?

squeakyfreakytoy · 24/10/2011 23:08

I imagine she would if there are cars parked before the drive entrance.

Presumably you are using your indicators?

If not, then that might explain their irritation Grin

You can't come from the other direction due to a very daft one way system (my road is not one way but if I was to try and come at it from another way, I'd not be able to with out a good mile plus detour!)

Yes I use my indicators, as I said above, I use them in plenty of time!

I have similar issues. I even pull over to let traffic past, then pull back out to reverse in. A number of times as I was half way in to my drive I've had people zoom past (speeding at at least 15m over the posted limit I might add), just missing my front bumper. I too get the urge to stop my car, block them and give them what for... but never will as I'm too worried about pissing off anyone else that would be inconvenienced. How sad am I? Grin

You have to ignore the beepers for your own sanity. They do not have the ability to walk in your mocassins so do it in your own way.

I usually turn right onto my drive, and sure enough I get beeps when I slow down. And if Heaven forbid I have to stop because of oncoming traffic it's hoot, hoot, hoot, they obviously think I should go out of my way. It's worst when traffic coming the other way is nose-to-tail which occasionally happens; then I have to wait until one of the oncoming drivers has the sense to see that it makes no difference to let me cross, and people behind go berserk - they obviously think I should go to the roundabout up the hill, turn, and join the crawl.

And it's worst during the first half of each school run, if I happen to be out then, when parents are on the way to school. Nothing is allowed to delay them!

I would have to get out of my car and ask them very sweetly what the problem was!

YANBU - I have the same problem and often have to wait for cars to leave me a gap - sometimes they just keep coming until the road is at gridlock as I stop and need to turn right but they are blocking my drive and cars further along the street stop the traffic progressing. Have learnt just to sit and wait and ignore everyone until someone realises what I am doing.

Just think FUCK IT and ignore everyone!

I live on a main road. I don't drive but feel sorry for my neighbour who does, as she has similar issues to the ones described here. I'm just the daft bint who stops the bus at rush hour every morning to get on it. That seems to irritate the commuters tooWink

I have this. Except I don't have a car. My front gate comes out onto a pathway that is used as a rat-run by commuters and people bypassing the high street. There are days when I can't even get out of my own gate or I have to stand for ages waiting to turn into my own gate.

I have perfected the "I actually live here so you can fuck right off with your tutting at having to move over or wait 0.5 seconds" and Hmm looks.

Or if I have the buggy I just swing it towards the gate and it's tough for anyone oblivious to other people or too important to slow down/move a little bit. It's only the nobbers who risk injury Grin

Or poke your tongue out.

I have a similar situation at my parents' house. It's opposite a local football club and god forbid I should try and reverse into the driveway when people need to get out of the club! Tis the only time I ever given the finger.

YANBU it is your driveway and you need to get in! Just ignore.

Btw, as an aside, if you live on a main road (not 100% sure what the definition is of this), the Highway Code says you must not reverse onto the road from your driveway - ie you should reverse into your driveway so you can drive onto the main road from your drive when you leave your property.
If you reverse out onto a main road and a car coming along hits you, it's generally deemed your fault.

Not sure if that is an option or may be irrelevant if you are able to turn the car around once on the driveway.

I feel your pain. I have taken to using my hazzards - it seems to alert people a little more. I think otherwise people assume that I'm/we're indicating to turn down the next road on the left rather than a driveway. I prefer to back in too - but most of the time it's just not possible so I have to take my life in my hands and back out.

I live on a busy road and get this all the time. If you even dare to slow down and stop to do any parallel parking then you are basically committing a crime. Some really cheeky ones carry on hooting while you park! I did once stop parking halfway through because I was fed up, got out and went and tapped on the window to ask the driver why she was hooting, and the woman looked a bit sheepish and apologetic and then I realised I vaguely knew her because her daughter goes to gymnastics with my daughter... we can laugh about it now, but just goes to show that even nice people turn into monsters behind the steering wheel.

Best thing though is to just ignore ignore ignore.

You cannot reverse onto a drive unless when you stop the people behind you will give you space; which usually they won't. My road does not qualify as a main road in anyone's book although it is sometimes busy. I drive on and reverse off; oddly reversing off is rarely a problem, even at busy times somebody always stops and I never have to wait long. As I say it's the driving on which somehow seems to piss of the I'm-in-a-rush brigade.

Ha, I've been beeped for having the temerity to slow down and turn left into my drive which is very steep and I had indicated in good time too. Comes with the territory of living on a rural 40mph road.

Best think i ever saw was a mum being beeped at pulling out of nursery car park - she stoped her car in the middle of the road calmly got out walked over to the the white van man and in front of all the other mums said do you have a problem? then casually saunted back to her car and poodled off ;)
