AIBU?

to dislike the sound of computer typing in the office

I share an office, and computer typing is a natural part of office life. But when I'm struggling, the sound of loud typing nearby can sometimes really annoy me - how are they typing so fast? Are they even thinking about what they're typing? Can't they do it quieter?

I know I am being unreasonable, but be kind

Ear plugs?

Are headphones an option for you, to cover the noise?

I used to have coworkers get snarky at me for typing so fast. Hmm

I touch type and due to many many years at it, yes I type fast. It's not their fault though ay. All keyboards are different.

What are you struggling about then?

Lmao YANBU but it does sound a little weird Grin

I taught myself to touch type from scratch....never even learnt typing at school

And yes, you do have to think about what you're typing but hitting the right keys without looking becomes second nature.

I can type 110 words per minute....or 69 real ones Wink

Well I say I taught myself...really it was Mavis Beacon Blush

The job I do involves writing reports, so sometimes it requires thinking, so when I'm thinking the crash-crash can be really difficult to drown out. I know this is such a minor niggle

YABU to work in an office if you find the sound of typing distracting.

Headphones are the way forward. Or earplugs. Or just getting used to it.

I can think faster than I can type. Well, I can certainly talk faster than I can type, anyway.

YABU
Go and get a job on a farm or something
You work in an office and your job involves writing. What on earth do you expect?

It's like working in a chippy and being distracted by the sound of the deep fat fryer Grin

Oh dear. It really is part of office life, you know! If it really bugs you then I think headphones with some familiar music is probably the most effective way to drown it out.

I know I'm being unreasonable, it's just that some people seem to be louder typers than others, and it can be a little difficult to concentrate

do the loud typers have a different type of keyboard? I have a laptop these days, and it's much quieter than my old desktop keyboard.

Not that knowing would help you any, just interested!

you could try this free noise generator. I find the oscillating pink noise ok to work with.

I'm a loud, fast typist. Only one person has ever found this a fault.

Not that I'm suggesting you'd do anything like this OP but one of her many complaints to the boss about us was that: 'the sound of typing, phones ringing and idle chatter sometimes forces me to leave early.'

His secretary intercepted the memo (before emails) and told us. I wish she'd have let him see it.

DP takes the piss out of me when I am MNing on the sofa. He says I am typing "furiously". Nope, just typing.

YABU to be annoyed at someone else's fast typing, but YANBU to be annoyed at loud typing. Some people bash the keys unnecessarily. I don't know what you can do though because I asked the culprit politely to type more quietly, culprit did, but then kept forgetting.

Softer keyboards, I have a keyboard here at home where there is no noise.

One of my colleagues is a comedy typer. Unbelievable how loud he types it drives me mad. It even annoys people I'm on the phone with.

He also cracks his knuckles and sighs very very heavily and makes hissing noises through his teeth.

I cant think why it would be noisy. PCs are so much quieter than typewriters.

I work in a huge open plan office and I like to use my portable DAB radio when i am trying to concentrate. I listen to plays on R4xtra rather than music.

But you might find this more distracting than helpful.

Unless it is that particular type of noise that you cant stand.

There are certain noises that drive me mad although other people seem to like them.

I think earplugs are your only option really.

YANBU at all. You can be a fast typer without being loud. The trouble is, many people have never been taught to type so there are the one-finger peckers bashing away loudly and slowly* and the self-taught touch-typers who can't seem to type gently. Bad typing is a disaster for the day-dreamers thinkers amongst us. And not all workplaces look kindly upon wearing headphones when your phone might also ring or your colleagues might occasionally wish to talk to you.

Totally unreasonable to say "don't work in an office if you don't like the sound of typing" Grin Like, we all have a choice??

Oh God, I used to hate it. I'd put my earphones in and listen to the radio.

I particularly hated the noise of the Apple keypads more than the normal Windows ones.

I actually really like that sound.

YABU. Quill pens and typewriters are gone. Get used to it.

Those of us who learnt to type on an old word-processor got used to having to 'thwack' the keys, and the quicker you type, the louder it gets. You would hate working with me - I'm a very fast, noisy typer, and I couldn't slow down or type quieter, because the minute I got 'into' the typing, I'd forget about trying to be quiet, and would just type loudly and quickly just like I am now. I have actually had to change the speed of the keyboard on my laptop because I type to fast for the default speed, otherwise there is a delay in the words appearing on the screen!

I'm sorry if it annoys some people - but I can't help being a quick, noisy typist - it's just how I type. Same as some people have an annoying, screechy voice - they can't help that either!
