My older brother is staying with us at the moment - he's always been 'eccentric.'

He is currently upstairs, alone, having a loud conversation with himself and roaring with laughter. Not just little giggles but full on belly laughs.

It's weird!

I would be very worried tbh. I don't think that is eccentric - what do you mean by eccentric?

TheLadyEvenstar · 24/10/2011 14:39

you sure he is talking to himself?

Report
headfairy · 24/10/2011 14:39

maybe he's on the phone?

Or writing a stand up routine?

a wee bit yes
but unless there is a problem like you think he's drug taking or mental health issues like being manic depression -ask him to share the joke with you and see how he reacts -good luck

I'm absolutely positive it's to himself: he has always done it. :-/

Couldn't he be on a mobile phone? Couldn't he be reading a book? I laugh out loud sometimes when reading. I also talk to my husband when his face appears on the computer screen. Hmmm. Yes, people have sometimes called me eccentric.

So what if he is eccentric? Why does he have to live life the way other people do? Let him be himself.

'Eccentric' means 'outside the circle'.

Isn't talking loudly to yourself considered a sign of schitzophrenia?

Report
Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie · 24/10/2011 14:43

why dont you ask him who hes talking too?

Report

I wasn't looking for a translation- I was asking OP what eccentric meant to her. If he prances about in a kilt and feather boa reciting poetry I'd call him eccentric - others would call him other things - it's all relative.

Oh god save us from online psychiatrists! If he's always done it and is fine, leave him alone. And get some fresh air- it's half-term!

i dont think it's creepy. creepy is something that scares you or gives you the shivers. are you scared of him?

He's not a 'normal' individual to be honest but the loud conversations and laughing are getting a bit much. It definitely isn't reading / computer related either: he moves around muttering and mumbling then suddenly says 'oh RIGHT' then erupts into HOHAAAAHOHOHO laughing.

I've asked him nicely to stfu twice and getting no joy.

You find your brother creepy for acting in a way he's always acted?

Report
HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo · 24/10/2011 14:47

have you never asked him who he is talking to? i find it strange that you tell him to STFU then come here saying he is creepy rather than asking him about it. he's your brother not a stranger.

Some things makes people feel uncomfortable though and, if it's something that has always happened, maybe OP isnt sure what is normal anymore.

Referring to me by any chance LeBOOOf?

I don't profess to being any type of on-line psychiatrist, was only pointing out that it was a trait.

I only have pets so I don't look as though I'm talking to myself Grin

I have to remember not to do it when I'm out, especially ranting under my breath at wankers parking on the pavement Angry

I definately don't have schizophrenia.
