My older brother is staying with us at the moment - he's always been 'eccentric.'

He is currently upstairs, alone, having a loud conversation with himself and roaring with laughter. Not just little giggles but full on belly laughs.

It's weird!

DoMeDon Mon 24-Oct-11 14:36:52

I would be very worried tbh. I don't think that is eccentric - what do you mean by eccentric?

TheLadyEvenstar Mon 24-Oct-11 14:39:04

you sure he is talking to himself?

headfairy Mon 24-Oct-11 14:39:05

maybe he's on the phone?

Or writing a stand up routine?

curlycreations Mon 24-Oct-11 14:39:53

a wee bit yes
but unless there is a problem like you think he's drug taking or mental health issues like being manic depression -ask him to share the joke with you and see how he reacts -good luck

TeapotsInJune Mon 24-Oct-11 14:39:57

I'm absolutely positive it's to himself: he has always done it. :-/

Couldn't he be on a mobile phone? Couldn't he be reading a book? I laugh out loud sometimes when reading. I also talk to my husband when his face appears on the computer screen. Hmmm. Yes, people have sometimes called me eccentric.

So what if he is eccentric? Why does he have to live life the way other people do? Let him be himself.

colken Mon 24-Oct-11 14:41:26

'Eccentric' means 'outside the circle'.

fuzzynavel Mon 24-Oct-11 14:41:43

Isn't talking loudly to yourself considered a sign of schitzophrenia?

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie Mon 24-Oct-11 14:43:01

why dont you ask him who hes talking too?

Cheeseandseveredfingersarnie Mon 24-Oct-11 14:43:10

i mean to

curlycreations Mon 24-Oct-11 14:43:24

apart from talking and laughing to himself is his other behavior ok

DoMeDon Mon 24-Oct-11 14:43:43

I wasn't looking for a translation- I was asking OP what eccentric meant to her. If he prances about in a kilt and feather boa reciting poetry I'd call him eccentric - others would call him other things - it's all relative.

LeBOOOf Mon 24-Oct-11 14:43:57

Oh god save us from online psychiatrists! If he's always done it and is fine, leave him alone. And get some fresh air- it's half-term!

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo Mon 24-Oct-11 14:44:02

i dont think it's creepy. creepy is something that scares you or gives you the shivers. are you scared of him?

TeapotsInJune Mon 24-Oct-11 14:45:22

He's not a 'normal' individual to be honest but the loud conversations and laughing are getting a bit much. It definitely isn't reading / computer related either: he moves around muttering and mumbling then suddenly says 'oh RIGHT' then erupts into HOHAAAAHOHOHO laughing.

I've asked him nicely to stfu twice and getting no joy.

SixStringWidow Mon 24-Oct-11 14:46:28

You find your brother creepy for acting in a way he's always acted?

HeresTheScaryThingBooyhoo Mon 24-Oct-11 14:47:52

have you never asked him who he is talking to? i find it strange that you tell him to STFU then come here saying he is creepy rather than asking him about it. he's your brother not a stranger.

DoMeDon Mon 24-Oct-11 14:51:42

Some things makes people feel uncomfortable though and, if it's something that has always happened, maybe OP isnt sure what is normal anymore.

fuzzynavel Mon 24-Oct-11 14:54:40

Referring to me by any chance LeBOOOf?

I don't profess to being any type of on-line psychiatrist, was only pointing out that it was a trait.

Everlong Mon 24-Oct-11 14:58:18

Eccentric as in dresses differently, a bit ott, talks to stray cats type of stuff or scary and temperamental?

Cos if it's the former, no that wouldn't worry me. Intact it would probably set me off.

AgentZigzag Mon 24-Oct-11 15:08:18

I only have pets so I don't look as though I'm talking to myself grin

I have to remember not to do it when I'm out, especially ranting under my breath at wankers parking on the pavement angry

I definately don't have schizophrenia.

ShriekingLisa Mon 24-Oct-11 15:13:18

i would ask him who he is talking to?

TeapotsInJune Mon 24-Oct-11 15:32:10

I know who he is talking to! He is talking to himself!
