Here - a nice bit of misogynism from the police in Wales.

How about a big poster suggesting helpfully "Rape. Don't be a rapist. Use your dick sensibly. Rapists feature in 100% of rapes??"

And good idea.

It's awful.

I wonder how many posts we can get to before someone comes along and says: 'Well, they do have a point...'?

Nice. Because if a woman is drunk she is clearly asking to be raped. Women, of course, ought to be encouraged to drink responsibly. So should men. But to suggest if you get pissed you deserve whatever happens to you afterwards is ludicrous.

There is a good link to an ironic "leaflet" advising men on how to avoid raping women on another thread. I like the "use your dick sensibly" slogan though.

Well in fairness it doesn't say the poster is aimed at women
But I do tend to agree with you

I reckon, oooh, 17 posts in before that gets said.

Sorely tempted to phone the force responsible and register my rage distaste.

There's a picture of a woman on the poster. Of course it is aimed at women.

op you are totally missing the point of the poster.

it is suggesting you do not get so batshit drunk that you become an easy target of a rapist.

tell me why you think a poster saying do not rape will deter rapists who are willing to break the law and destroy someones life is going to help anything.

dont be so frigging dramatic

Disgusting.
As usual the campaign attempts to absolve the perpetrator of any blame.
What about all the elderly ladies raped in their beds/on the way home from bingo. I suppose thats their fault for daring to display themselves to weak and feeble menz who cant help but act on their urges.
Rnnnaaarrrgghhh!! and breathe

I don't get your anger. I might be a feminist, but it doesn't mean my rapist is. Idealism only works in an ideal world.

here's the thread yo u're talkign about
that's a much better way to put an issue across
why do they always aim these campaigns at the victim? ConfusedAngry
like the rapists have absolutely no control over what they do?
fucking twats.

(i can't put across how angry this whole thing makes me)

If being drunk is a factor in rape why are there no 'theft dont be a victim. GBH- dont be a victim. Bag theft- dont be a victim' type posters? Because as per usual society ALWAYS find a way to justify rape and why it happens.

Someone explain to me exactly how this poster is blaming the woman in a rape scenario

Report

'it is suggesting you do not get so batshit drunk that you become an easy target of a rapist.

Yes, that if said rapist targets you there's a chance you can escape. It's like insurance- it's entirely teh burglar's fault but you'd want to protect yourself anyway.

Not entirely comfy with the poster, but compeltely get what the aim is even if perhaps clumsily done.

Could I have avoided rape by certain sensible actions? yes. Do I wish I had done? of course. Does that aple any blame on me? no.

spookshowangellovesit · 19/10/2011 16:35

the point is minimiss you should be able to get bat shit drunk if you want to and a poster telling woman not to because you are making yourself a target for rapists is suggesting that by proxy the woman is in some way culpable in her rape because she got bat shit drunk.
dont be so frigging ignorant.

I realise a poster is unlikely to change the behaviour of rapists. It'd just be a welcome change to see a bit of public rapist-blaming instead of victim-blaming.

Women are not responsible for the actions of rapists. Rapists are.

I think this is why it is so important to have some proper feminist discussion in all sectors of public information/relations. There is a lot of safety advice out there that is well-meaning in its intent but inherently victim-blaming.

To be fair to people who haven't really considered it, if alcohol features in 2/3rds of rapes, it makes sense to think that giving advice to drink sensibly is a good way to protect women. I used to think like that until I had my eyes opened to a few rape myths. If I hadn't been forced to rethink my views I would probably still be thinking along those lines.

You don't see how wrong it is until you start comparing it to other crimes. Alcohol is an aggravating factor in many different crimes, but in all these different crimes any posters are aimed squarely at the person drinking the alcohol, not their potential victim.

How about lots of us emailing about the poster and suggesting alternatives:

"Alcohol features in 2/3rds of rape. If she's drunk, you're a rapist."
"Alcohol features in 2/3rds of rape. If you're too drunk to check she's willing, you're a rapist."
"No means No. Don't rape."

How about "women do not get married, marriage features in over 60% of rapes"
Considering over 80% of rapes are committed by people you know yet according to this poster only 66% involve alcohol, this is basicly telling women they cannot drink ever, not even in their own homes. Most rapists do not rape their victims because the victim is drunk, and even in the relatively few stranger rapes or rapes by people you do not know that well, being sober will not do you much good until it comes to prosecuting. You will still be a victim, just one who gets a tad more sympathy from twats.

grrr

the second campaign linked to doesn't even make sense (not even mentioning the disgusting image straight from a sex/salsher movie) - "the journey is not being recorded...you are putting yourself in danger"

That didn't stop one of the most prolific rapists in the UK in his licensed black cab Hmm

fucking stupid and dangerous ideology

spook how am i ignorant. If the statistics say that 2/3 of rape victims were drunk then it suggests rapists target drunk women. It makes sense because if you are going to rape someone it would probably be ideal to find someone totally not with it to target.

the poster is simply telling you not to become that target.

just the same as posters/articles tell you how not to become a victim of car theft, house theft, etc etc

they are simply there to make people more aware of what they can do to avoid being robbed or attacked because like it or not there are rapists, murderers and people willing to break into your homes whether you like it or not and it isn't enough to want to be able to walk down an alley on your own in the dark while batshit drunk because you want to.

so do not call me ignorant because i have some common sense. i am currently in the age range/gender according to statistics to be mugged. So i act smart when i am out on my own at night because i do not want to be a victim.

minimiss are you for real?

Dont be so dramatic?

After fucking years and years and YEARS of campaigning for better treatement of rape victims, better understanding, better reporting rates, better conviction rates

and a police force brings out a poster that sends me zooming right back to the 70s?

I'd say that calls for a bit more than drama.

Good God alive.

How about 'a dont grow up thinking you have the right to have sex with women regardless of their wishes' campaign and stick them up in preschools around the country?
