AIBU?

to put DCs in matching coats?

Boring question, but I need the answer before shelling out on outerwear for the nippers.

My mother used to put my sister and I in matching clothes. Drove us nuts, particularly DSis who would wear the same dress for 4 years after having received my hand me downs when hers were outgrown poor thing.

Am I projecting? The only winter coat I like for DCs is available now in only one colour... childhood flashbacks are holding me back. DCs are close in age and under 2 so can't complain either way. So what I mean is:

Does it look naff to dress your children in matching outfits?

Apologies again for being terminally dull, will post an AIBU about porn/curious sexual practices another day

Sorry but, if you really have to ask how you should dress your children then YUBU.

I think it is fine, and if you are out together its a bloody good idea if they wander slightly as it makes them much easier to spot.

its just the coats that will be matching yes? are they a plain block colour? if so i cant imagine why it would seem they are matching.

btw whats YUBU?

I'm the wrong one to ask as my DS's have loads of clothes the same, including coats!

(And mine are 7 and 5)

I couldn't do it for the reasons you give. I hated wearing an identical dress to my sister, my poor brother used to be made to wear a shirt or waistcoat that was made from the same fabric as our dresses.

Surprised you need to ask after suffering the same as a child. Personally I hate to see children dressed the same, and never did with my 4 who were close in age. Seriously you only like one coat? Can't you pass dc1's to dc2 and just buy new for dc1?

but surely a coat is different ... they were it out ... if you were talking dresses or top and jeans then i'd say YABU but surely not a coat.

Maybe it is time to try and move on from your childhood feelings? If you put them both in the same coat now it doesn't mean you always will. You could look for another coat - taking time and effort - or just put them in the same coat and realise it doesn't bring bad luck Smile.

Lots of siblings around here have the same coats. No one takes any notice as it isn't a big deal.

Scaredbear/tallulah/scuzy, mine are 5 & 3 and quite often choose to dress the same sometimes. I hope they never get any of your pitying looks Hmm

My mother used to do this to the 6 of us. We looked like the Von Trapp family. [hgrin] I resented it at the time, but now I often see two little girls (about 6 and 4 years old) who wear matching red coats and I think they look adorable.

I think I wouldn't because of the hand me down issue. The younger child is going to be bored shitless by the same coat year after year.

YANBU IMO. but i love seeing siblings in matching outfits and i was one aswell. me and dsis are 17 months apart and we wore matching outfits. i see the photos now and think we looked really cute. if we weren't matching we were at least wearing co-ordinating colours.

my dses are 4 years apart so i think too much of a gap to make them wear matching. i would love to be able to though. they do have two coats (both bought for them by different people so no intention to match on my part) and i think they look really smart when they both wear them.

At this age it's ok. But not when they are mobile.

I actually think it is more dangerous to gave your Dcs in the same coat because when they are running around, you may think you have seen both kids but only seen one. And also because you are more likely to shout the wrong name out when trying to attract their attention in a potentially dangerous situation.

Mine all have the same coat but in different colours. Personally I think they look fabulous...

If they all had same colour I think it would be fine too. Not all the same if it was a garish pattern though, or unusual style.

I hated having to wear the same clothes as my little sis! BUT I have dressed mine in the same outfits but only when they were little (and they are twins so a bit more acceptable?)
Wrt to coats, There isn't usually a choice of coats that are warm, waterproof, don't have a detachable hood, not £££ and in the same shop. I'm not traipsing round different shops for coats so my DCs usually have the same one.

I've done it when BHS had some particularly nice light weight waterproofs and no where else did and the girls themselves have chosen identical sparkly cardigans and hoodies over the years. The coats were a pain because I'd pick up the wrong one from the hall. The hoodies have turned out to be great because DD2 particularly liked it and was very happy to wear DD1s when hers got too small.
I have once deliberately dressed them exactly the same and that was to go on holiday. DD1 is particularly fond of wandering off, DD2 tends to keep one eye on where we are, but was very small. I hoped that having them both in bright pink at the airport they'd be hard to loose and and anyone finding them would at least pair them up.

Scaredbear - I haven't dressed them the same since they were babies. The only things they have that have the same are school uniforms, and football kits.

For stuff like coats though there isn't usually much choice without traipsing round different shops. Shopping with 2 7 YO boys is bad enough without making it more difficult.

My girls, even now (age nearly 11 and nearly 8) occasionally get up and decide they want to be dressed the same. They've always done this right from the point of first choosing. I usually make sure they have a couple of outfits the same. Sometimes they will wear them separately, other times they choose to be the same.
Don't think they'd mind matching coats either.

As they are under 2 and won't mind either way, YANBU.

I don't really see the problem with dressing them alike occasionally. Though, I could be hellhasnofury's sister - my Mum made our clothes, my sister and I were often dressed alike, and my brother often had similar too.

I don't think it really bothered us at the time, and now I can't bring myself to resent it in retrospect. Now I have 2 girls of my own, I may even dress them similarly on occasion!
