AIBU?

to think Interview with a Vampire is a piece of crap and the reviews lied to me.

Ok, perhaps I jumped on this band wagon 20 years too late but I've just finished reading this slow, drawn out novel after everyone I know (except one friend) said it was the definitive vampire novel. Even the reviews from Amazon were great.

I just found it all so childish and although everyone says its not like the porn filled stereotypical vampire yarn, I found that it was exactly that! The repressed homosexuality was glaring, and the 'sensual' child vampire just freaked me out.
I couldn't follow Anne Rice's writing because she spends too long describing what everyone is thinking, you don't get any real description of the beauty of Paris, and it felt very much like she wanted to write erotica but bottled it, so made it about vampires instead.

Dracula is the definitive vampire novel. Also, I hate the bitch for spawning Stephanie Meyer (who is also sexually repressed if you ask me!)

AIBU? My DP loved it [hmmm]

Gosh, no, yanbu, it's shite. I read it years ago when I was a teenager, even then I thought it was mince. The next two are quite good as I remember though, much faster paced at the very least. Probably quite childishly over done too though, I haven't read them for years. All very angsty.

Anne Rice's vampires are awesome. But I hated Interview With, worst of the lot IMO!

Maybe you should have watched the film instead. I was utterly obsessed with it at about 16 and can still remember most of the words - and Antonio Banderas makes a much more attractive vampire than Robert Pattinson.

Ann Rice also writes erotica under a pseudonym btw, and some of her other books, Cry to Heaven, off the top of my head are just out and out gay porn.

Oh lord. I read a fair amount of Anne Rice when I was 13 or so, hoping that the sex would at some stage become interesting. It didn't.

IIRC, she write about someone having sex with a child at one point, fairly graphially (Arnaud? Armand? Summat like that). And apparently - though to be fair to the woman I don't know if this is true - when her son told her he was gay she told him she 'knew' he wasn't because she knew all about gay men from writing her books.

Pile o' shite.

I loved IWTV, but I was, crucially, 13. It is not a book to be read for the first time as an actual grown-up.

Anne Rice's writing style makes me want to poke out my eyes with sharp sticks.

YABU.I love it,even if they ruined Armand's character.

I'm not fond of Anne Rice herself though. She won't allow anyone to write fanfic based on her books.

Each to his own. I LOVE The early Vampire Chronicles. Vampire Lestat is my favourite one.

LTBR - crikey, that's pretty funny since there are reams of it out there! Or were when I was 13. It was like my gateway fanfic. Ah, the memories.

It was dire.

Try "Salem's Lot" by Stephen King...the most frightening vampire novel I have ever read.

I'm sure it's still out there, but it's not easy to find,or at least it wasn't the last time I looked, a year or so ago, because she's threatened to sue fanfic writers.

As a silly old goth, I'll say this:

Reading Interview is like wading through congealed blamange. Urgh.

The Vampire Lestat (next one in the series) however, is brilliant.

Perhaps she's nice on FB,but threatening to sue fanfic writers isn't acceptable imho. She may have loosened up over the years however.
