Had a smear test yesterday at 4.45. DH made sure he was home slightly earlier (self employed and flexible) to look after 8mo ds. I went and took my kindle, expecting a good 20 mins reading time in the waiting room. To my surprise and horror I was called in straight away and done withing 3 mins!! Was it worng then to spend 20 mins reading in the car afterwards before going back home to dh and ds?? I told a friend about this today and she was aghast that I didn't want to go back home straight away - but at the minute ds is v demanding and loo breaks, showers and time in drs waiting rooms are precious bits of me time that I savour!!

yanbu - very sensible.

Bravo and hurrah!

helpmabob Sat 15-Oct-11 19:46:43

I would have done exactly the same. I actually can't believe your friend was aghast, what is there to be aghast about. Every mum I know craves time to themselves for a little bit and snatches those precious minutes when they can.

BloodandSCRUMatron Sat 15-Oct-11 19:47:01

of course yanbu.

it was 20 min. it's not like you left dc with a stranger. does she think your dh cant cope with his own dc?

i spend hours in the bath on my own and dp does not bat an eyelid at being left with all 3 dc.

oh god no, I used to do this with my trusty paperback and often thought about inventing appointments so I could get some peace. smile

blackoutthesun Sat 15-Oct-11 19:47:36

i would have taken more then 20 minutes grin

And if I may say so from another perspective - good to give DH and DS some time together. Good luck with the result.

FlamingoBingo Sat 15-Oct-11 19:48:11

YANBU and were in fact very sensible. Must look after yourself so you can look after your little one!

OneNerveAndYouAreOnIt Sat 15-Oct-11 19:49:04

as long as you dont mind him doing the same ;)

mumnotmachine Sat 15-Oct-11 19:49:16

You should have had at least an hour!!

BOOareHaunting Sat 15-Oct-11 19:49:20

YANBU and your friend is clearly barking.

20 minutes to yourself is not a crime.

It's perfectly reasonable to leave DH with DS to go and have a shop, coffee with friends, trip to the library to chose yourself some books etc.

minimisschief Sat 15-Oct-11 19:49:50

tbh i think it was a bit selfish. you could have just asked your dh for sometime to yourself rather than sneakily doing it.

And by ask i mean you say dh i want some me time at some point and you are looking after kids, you are welcome to have some you time too at somepoint.

I mean it is quite easy really

Trills Sat 15-Oct-11 19:52:57

YANBU - and well done on getting your smear.

(I also agree with OneNerve that in order to get your NBU badge you have to accept that it would be OK for DH to do the same)

oldenoughtowearpurple Sat 15-Oct-11 19:53:00

Only 20 mins? I think you are a saint.

MamaMaiasaura Sat 15-Oct-11 19:54:04

YaNbu and also not selfish either (WTF minimiss?!) smile blokes dont have to have smears and they can be bloody uncomfortable. The only thong I would say is you should have found a coffee place and read while eating cake and drinking coffee grin

MamaMaiasaura Sat 15-Oct-11 19:54:44

Thing not thong blush

Shakey1500 Sat 15-Oct-11 19:55:27

Definitely YANBU. It's no worse than (my) DH "nicking a pint" on the way home. The sneakiness makes it even more delicious grin

t0lk13n Sat 15-Oct-11 19:55:35

I`m with Awen...I would have had a coffee then went home!

ScarahStratton Sat 15-Oct-11 19:57:19

YADNBU, I have actually 'hidden' at A&E in the name of <relative> peace and quiet.

ChippingInToThePumpkinLantern Sat 15-Oct-11 19:59:16

Your friend is barking.

It concerns me a little bit that you felt the need to do it though, will your DH not just look after DS is you want some time to yourself? If he wouldn't this is something you really need to sort out - if he would and this was just a sneaky 20 mins then good on you smile

Kirst16 Sat 15-Oct-11 19:59:25

YANBU at all. You left your DS with their dad, thus giving them some quality time together. Only difference is that I'd have taken advantage of the extra free time on my hands, and would have nipped to town and went and had coffee and cake too.

I spent two hours waiting in A&E a few months back because I got the end of a cotton bud stuck in my ear blush and for the first hour that I was there it was bliss.

I took my book and felt relaxed and peaceful for the first time in ages. Then DH turned up with LO and ruined it to keep me company.

Sometimes I find myself daydreaming about another minor injury meaning I have to go back to A&E... grin

Sidge Sat 15-Oct-11 20:02:43

You were totally unreasonable.

What you should have done was have your smear, go for a massage, manicure/pedicure or facial, then sit in a cafe with your Kindle sipping hot chocolate and eating cakes. Then strolled home 3 hours later feeling very chuffed that not only did you get your smear done you also had some me time as well.

Laquitar Sat 15-Oct-11 20:05:51

grin YANBU!

I remember when i had 2 under 3 and my mum came so i went to dentist. I sat on the nice comfortable chair, the dentist did something in my mouth and after only 5 min he said 'ok done'. To which i replied 'only 5 minutes (rest)? 'hmm

He was a bit surprised.
