AIBU?

To think DN's BF is being unkind about Pandora bracelet?

Having no prior experience of Pandora bracelets, I would like the benefit of your advice. Are they chavvy or DN appears to have found "a steady chap with good prospects, and good looks to boot" to quote my Great Aunt.

She also has a long standing best friend who seems possibly to be a little miffed about this boyfriend.

This week the boyfriend has given my DN a Pandora bracelet with a few charms on it. The best friend announced that she thinks Pandora bracelets are chavvy? DN seems hurt and upset.

was she just being unkind?

Jealous and unkind I think.

It's probbaly mostly jealousy that your DN isn't spending all her time with her friend.

I think they're ok...i was given a troll bead one for a birthday and they're expensive to buy charms for.

BF sounds a little jealous maybe?

Unkind.

That's a generous gift - those Pandora bracelets are expensive. He sounds lovely

Anything 'fashionable' will eventually be deemed 'Chavvy'

When I was a teenager it was all Gate Bracelets, Belcher chains, Rope chains, ID bracelets etc...

At the time they were considered nice, but when they got too fashionable they became 'Chavvy'

Really your DN should be thinking along the lines that it's a gift from her BF...she likes it, he likes it so what does anyone else's opinion matter? Confused

Isn't Burberry suposed to be 'chavvy' now.?

The word chavvy is a horrid term.

I don't like pandora bracelets. I think they are very overpriced and just rather vulgar. Price alone does not make taste.

However if a friend was given one I would say "how lovely".

So the friend is jealous.

I think the only thing YABU for is using the term chav.

Chav is a horrible label to put on someone.

The friend is jealous. The gift is between your DN and her boyfriend. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks.

It is the wrong discussion to have with your daughter.

If you are given something with love and kindness, it is the feeling behind the gift that counts, not the exact materialistic quality of the gift. Who cares whether it is cheap or expensive, chavvy or of the highest taste provided the giver gave it for the right reasons. That is the important lesson to teach.

She should wear it with pride.

Never heard of pandora bracelets.

However, it doesn't matter what it is. A friend won't try to hurt you. Which is, it seems, what that spiteful comment was intended to do.

It does sound like jealousy to me

Some of them are very pretty (although i am aware, pretty isn't the general 'done/allowed thing' on MN). I would say that they are suited to younger women and girls, who, other bracelets can look tacky, on.

The friend is probably finding it tough accepting that there is a bf on the scene.

Chav isn't always a horrible label. I know a lot of chavs who are proud to be a chav [hhmm] and yes reeling burberry is chavvy now unfortunately.

Pandora bracelets are catagorically not chavvy. Chavs tend to wear heavy gold chains, gold hoops and sovereign rings, and those ragdoll necklaces. Not pandora bracelets.

Burberry not chavvy - they very cleverly manoeuvred the brand away from the signature check and back into high fashion once it developed those associations. They are doing very well as a consequence. Where have you been the last 10 yrs?!
