To think The Simpsons isn't that bad?

I've noticed some parents raising their eyebrows when other peoples DC mention they are allowed to watch The Simpsons.

Isn't it on at 6pm?

Is it any worse than the violent rubbish that CITV spew out?

I love the Simpsons , as do my 5 and 7 yr old boys .

What is supposed to be wrong with it ?

Any more grown up jokes pass them by .

charitygirl Fri 14-Oct-11 19:30:07

Well, I suppose if you don't want to inculcate a sophisticated SoH in your DCs...

SingingSands Fri 14-Oct-11 19:31:30

I personally don't like my kids watching it, as I think a lot of the script can run a bit close to the bone and is more suited to adult humour.

But my DH likes to watch it, and sometimes forgets that the kids are about so they end up watching it. Or they are playing next door when Mr Next Door is watching it and end up watching it. So Mrs Next Door and I sit in the kitchen and moan about them watching it grin

PeneloPeePitstop Fri 14-Oct-11 19:32:59

If everyone had the same SoH the world would be a very boring place.
Can't believe there's snobbery around humour!

Simpsons is nuffink. Now South Park would be an issue...

It's supposed to be funny? confused

The Simpsons are worshipped in the cheese house hold, it's fab.

Covers all ages too, the oldest simpsons fan I know is 102.

TheOriginalNutcracker Fri 14-Oct-11 19:35:13

We all watch it here and have never had an issue with it.

whackamole Fri 14-Oct-11 19:43:18

I love it. The jokes that might be construed as a bit too adult will go over the head of the average kid.

YANBU but YABU with your confused face at it being funny. It is funny!

MrBloomsNursery Fri 14-Oct-11 19:46:13

Actually I love the simpsons, but it's not suitable for young children. Everytime I put it on, there are half naked women clinging on to Mayor Quimby or some gay men kissing...mostly bikini clad women dancing around with big boobs. Not suitable for my 3 year old.

LynetteScavo Fri 14-Oct-11 19:47:31

Gay men kissing?????? shock grin

God forbid a three year old sees gay men kissing MrBloomsNursery! Is your three year old allowed to see a straight couple kissing?

MrBloomsNursery Fri 14-Oct-11 19:50:23

Yes! Gay men kissing!! grin. It's the episode where The Simpsons come to the UK.

bruffin Fri 14-Oct-11 19:51:41

DCs were bought up on the Simpsons, when the were little all the dodgy bits went over their heads. It just like the pantomine, for many years they went and all the inuendo went over their heads. This year we took them and they couldn't believe how rude it was (13 and 15)

aldiwhore Fri 14-Oct-11 19:51:47

I've found that pre-6 years old they don't even begin to get any 'rudeness' so we can all enjoy it on our varying levels. I have noticed that my 7/8 year old has started knowing something is rude even though he doesn't understand it.

We've not stopped watching it, we used it as a great example of appropriate behaviour, fine to watch, fine to laugh, very absolutely NOT fine to repeat. Credit where its due, my eldest 'gets' that lesson. And its a lesson that will be repeated many times as he grows.

aldiwhore Fri 14-Oct-11 19:53:49

GAY MEN KISSING pfft, that's something I actually would celebrate as an opening for a chat about love and all its forms.

bikincladwomen well my son isn't drooling and he sees worse on the beach.

Homer getting drunk its a fact of life... if you eat too many sweeties, which you adore, you'll act daft. If you're a grown up and drink too much beer, you'll act daft.

"GAY MEN KISSING pfft, that's something I actually would celebrate as an opening for a chat about love and all its forms" Exactly!!

gordyslovesheep Fri 14-Oct-11 20:01:55

pmsl we all love it - mine are 2.5, 7 and 9 - their morals seem to be intact despite being exposed to such horrors as men - kissing grin

AnyoneButLulu Fri 14-Oct-11 20:02:29

I love the Simpsons but I think it raises issues (sex, alcohol, terrible
imitable behaviour, Itchy & Scratchy) that are not suitable for younger children. DCs are 9 and 7 now and I'd be pretty OK with them watching it, but I made an active decision to avoid it when they were pre-school.

Dialsmavis Fri 14-Oct-11 20:06:16

I think the latest episodes are getting a but too adult but we watch it all the same. I actually preferred DS watching it when he was much younger than I do now (he is nearly 9) as not so much of the adult stuff goes over his head. What is wrong with seeing men kissing?

WTF is wrong with gay men kissing ? confused

It's one of the easier 'issues' to explain tbh, a simple 'sometimes boys like other boys and girls like other girls ' when kids are small enough to understand should suffice.

catgirl1976 Fri 14-Oct-11 20:09:41

Since when has kissing been unsuitable for children to see ffs?

Catsmamma Fri 14-Oct-11 20:10:43

I banned it!

but only because the constant Homer noises, Mr Burns impersonations and Ahhhhhhh haaaaaaaaah -ing were too much for me.

and mostly from dh to be fair.

we watch it now they have some commonsense are older.

pink4ever Fri 14-Oct-11 20:15:03

I used to love the simpsons but dh is a big fan so have seen them all loads of times now so getting a bit old! dcs love it-age 2,5 and 8.
