To boycott the fancy dress???

My 2 Ds have been invited to a "pirates and Princesses" fancy dress party. Great if you're a girl, Loads of beautiful princess costumes out there.

My boys are 1 & 3 and very small. All the shop pirate costumes are far to big & I don't have any trousers of ds2s that i particularly want to cut up.

Would IBU to just take them in normal clothes?

can you not just buy a cheap pair of primark trousers to cut? or just send them with a toy parrot and a pirate hat!

I think they would stand out if you sent them without, and they might feel akward/uncomfortable because you didnt dress them up which isnt really fair.

I would with the 1 YO, but just buy some crappy plastic stuff from the pound shop, a cutlass and eye patch, give him a head scarf and your 3 YO will think he's the bees knees

You don't need much - a hat or bandanna, stripey top, shorts, eyepatch or a cutlass, a few dabs of facepaint.

you dont need a costume shop.. just go into a charity shop and spend a couple of quid...

I did think about sending them as princesses ds2 already gets mistaken for a girl with his long hair!

I guess I just think they'll be the odd ones out in a home made crappy costume anyway cos there's only 1 or 2 other boys going that are older so will fit in the costumes!

My Boy was a pirate for his first birthday party in september (sad I know ). His outfit was second hand from ebay but it just came from Asda originally. The trousers are actually just mid-blue roll-up types with a button halfway up the calf to shorten the legs, and the top is just a red long sleeved affair with a pirate on the front. Actually its quite cute.

The other thing is I got a few piratey things in the 99p shop - plastic cutlasses, hook, eyepatch, foam sword etc. You could just do a stripey top and 3/4 length shorts with an eyepatch and a bandana.

Pirates aren't that difficult, we did a pirate birthday party for DD1. A stripy t-shirt, black trousers and homemade pirate hat, or a piece of bright coloured material as a bandana. If you haven't got a stripy t-shirt, just a plain white one, dark trousers and bandana would do! A waistcoat is also good, but I'm guessing you wouldn't have that as they're so young.

Charity shop. I get loads of bits from there to make costumes with. Pirate costumes are easy to make. (Jealous...haven't made a costume in ages).

why cant you go and get some stuff from a charity shop and hack it about? Eye patches and cutlass are a plenty in the lead up to Hallowe'en from all the pound shops.


'Boycott' is a silly word ..., I cant see you telling the host mother you are boycotting the party because you dont agree with the theme.

I find that most of the kids take their costumes off after a few minutes or don't want to wear them. Eye patches don't stay put so try drawing one on with black face paint/eyeliner, an eyeliner/mascara moustache is great too. A length of fabric or scarf makes a great sash around an ordinary shirt or t-shirt.

not crazy, as it halloween coming up so will get 2 wars out of it and it will also go into the dressing up box with every other costume i have got over the years or used again for teddies

You Are Being COMPLETELY Unreasonable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I know the OP and have already lent her a pirate costume for DS1 and if she'd bothered to ask I have stuff she could borrow for DS2 as well!
Her main issue is that she doesn't want them to dress as pirates cause pirates are baddies. So dress them as princes! Stick them in a nice outfit that you already have and get them to make a crown.

thats a bit harsh pinksomething I just don't want them looking all rubbish when all the little girls look all pretty. Your costume is wonderful & now everyone has given me ideas about the pound shop etc its not as bad!!!

My DS1 doesn't do fancy dress - there have been quite a few events where he's gone in normal clothes and didn't give a damn!!! There is no way I could get him to dress up as a pirate. Just getting him into costume for the nursery plays was painful enough.
