Is it unreasonable that aged 30 my favourite books are the Harry Potter books?

Since you ask, yes. They are fun, but they are also formulaic, derivative and, frankly not very well written. And they are intended for children.

YANBU to enjoy them. YABU to have them as your favourite books.

A bit U, yes. They are quite readable, but there is far far better out there! You should try new books instead of continually reading the same ones, you might find something else you like even better. Still reading kids books at 30 is a bit sad. (I'm 30 too BTW!) Try some Jane Austen or Agatha Christie as a good start.

I read a awful lot and do have other genres I enjoy but these are my favourite! I enjoy the classics and have just finished Moll Flanders which was great, I don't like Jane Austen much to be honest.

I like them, although wouldn't say they are my favourite books. But I wouldn't get all po-faced and snooty and look down my nose at you because they're yours either. And as for whether a book is badly written, there's plenty worse out there. Twilight made me cringe several times but I still enjoyed the story.

They are good books, but not the best books in the world. The way they are written grates a bit.

OP didn't say she didn't read anything else, she just said that Harry Potter was her favourite.
I read the whole series and really enjoyed them.
Each to their own.
I never got into Jane Austen either but have read and reread Georgette Heyer over and over again.

You can have any book as your favourite that you like.

(I would say, though, that there's a whole WORLD of books that are just as gripping, lots to look forward to )

They are for children and not that well written. which is why they are really comforting to read - it's like slipping back in time to reading an Enid Blyton, when your biggest responsibility was brushing your teeth.

Not unreasonable I suppose but they are pretty poor IMO. If you want children's fantasy literature that is worth reading try Philip Pullman, or Alan Garner. I just think that HP has 'poorly disguised screen play' written all over it.

I see HP for what it is - an over-hyped kids book - if you think about all the books that have been published and all the books that are written every year ...

Books don't have to be worthy - but then I never re-read books!

YANBU but I would like to know why they are your favourites above all others you have read.

I find it very difficult to say "This is my favourite..." anything and pick just one book or film or song. But I can give you a list of favourites, if more than one is allowed, and all with a reason why this book has made it to that list above many others (I read a lot )

And with books especially, I love to know why someone else loved or hated them. Especially if their reaction to it was the opposite to mine when I read it.

You would BU if you said they were the greatest books ever written -- but you didn't, just said they were your faves. Anything can be a fave!

They are still better than most of the dreck on the bestseller lists.
