to want a decent 'prom' dress for 10 year old?

ARGH. Small (135cm) 10 year old daughter needs a prom-type dress. We are after something a bit more modern and jazzy than monsoon type dresses but NOT strapless or spagetti straps. Don't want to pay more than £50. Can't find anything that looks cool. It's either too tarty, too bridemaidy or too disney. Any ideas?

large proprtion of tarty and not very age appropriate stuff but they do usually have some nice party dresses that could be prom dresses

8-12 is a horrible age to find clothes for

i would look on ebay.. there is bound to be something on there as they arent the type of dresses that could be worn often, and young girls will have grown out of them in no time at all...

DD wore a nice dress from Next with a little shrug. Other girls had dresses from New Look, Next and I think Debenhams.

YABTU to think a 10 yo needs a prom dress of any sort. a nice party dress possobly - but really a prom dress for a kid at junior school

Nooo not Tammy Girl - all their prom type dresses are, erm, VERY revealing. I almost made the mistake of buying one for my DD - who is 13yo - and I was at how short the skirts were on them, and not one of them had any sort of strap at all.

Next / Monsoon / Debenhams all do much less revealing prom-type dresses.

New Look dresses, IMO, are also aimed at the older more tarty teenager.

Thanks for the tips. Looked at Tammy Girl on web just now. Nothing suitable at mo. Can't believe some of the dresses are made for small children! Ebay threw up some interesting examples! Really want to be able to try before I buy. Loshard - it's called a Year 6 'prom' - not too impressed about the whole thing but more annoyed at the hypermums than the kids. Debenhams looks the best bet so far. Will keep looking on their site, hopefully they will get some new stock in soon.

DD had "prom" in final year of primary so was 11 but some others 12. The couple of girls who had New Look dresses - couple were maxi dresses (girls who are a bit taller and "fuller figured IYSWIM and one was short (too short IMO) but as was in June was a little floral cotton thing which suited the kid (but was still too short IMO

Totally agree re the hypermums.I was on the "committee" - was v. stressful and I only kept going to meetings to stop it being hijacked by the "lets all hire limos" brigade - who were the mums of the boys !!!! The girls mums were far more sensible.

My DD, then 11, wanted a green prom dress, i found one on Ebay for about £15, i just typed in 'green prom dress size ..', the back was elasticated with a tie sash belt, so perfect for in between sizes.

There might be some ideas in a thread I started here -similar requirements with the added complication of 'development' - not found anything that fits our bill yet but DD doesn't like quite a lot of styles which quite possible are 'cool'

have just looked at all the Dehry kids dresses on the JL website . www.johnlewis.com/267348/Product.aspx Not sure whether I like them or not ? Have dd aged 11 and agree it is difficult age to buy for. Has anyone bought any of them.

I liked the look of some of the Dehry dresses (if not the pricetags) - but my 12 year old turned her nose up at all of them. I have absolutely no idea what she considers wrong with them!

Have you tried TK Maxx? They often have lovely dresses at reasonable prices.
