AIBU?

to think that this check out assistant was really quite thick?

So I was paying for my shopping in Morrisons this week and DD was with me with Robert, her black dolly. On taking the money the assistant looked at me and did one of those stage whisper kind of things, you know when they whisper quite loudly, really emphasising the words with overly full on mouth movements, and said "I'm not being racious or anything" and yes, she really did say Racious, not racist, "but I thought they they'd banned them now", pointing at Robert!!! Bit of an open mouthed look from me and she said "yes, I thought they'd banned black dolls these days".

I could only muster up a weak "no, I don't think so", before wandering off, shaking my head in disbelief Shock

Would it not be racist to ban black dolls?

Are you sure it wasn't some sort of Little Britain sketch you were caught up in, kitsmummy?

Gollywogs are not actually banned are they? I have seen quite a lot in shops, although often they do not use the word gollywog.

She's not 'thick' she's just got her wires crossed over the whole Gollywog saga by the sound of it.

She was being a bit daft, but I think it's a bit off to make comments about the intelligence of people who work on checkouts.

I worked on a checkout to fund my living expenses when I was doing my PhD, does that mean I was thick for only the hours I was working there and not when I was in the lab?

Poor Robert, does he [stage whisper] know he's, you know, black?

I think some of you here are being a bit checkout-ist.

a degree doesnt make you intelligent either

I hadn't thought about the gollywog thing actually. It was just a black baby though, like a white baby but black! No big black hair or golly features at all

Weeeeeeeeeeell....looking at it charitably, she obviously was thinking of a golliwog, now Robert may look nothing like that and therefore she was a bit dim but if in her mind your child did have a golliwog, then actually it's heartening that she was politely drawing to your attention to that fact that it's not really on.

It certainly doesn't make you thick either SpanishPaella, just like working on a checkout doesn't.

Aaaagh, I'm not commenting on all check out assistants, I'm just saying that this lady happened to be one to, you know, kind of add some context to how I came to have this conversation! If she worked in a bank or an estate agents, I would say "this bank lady" or "this estate agent"
