Yes, it is a bit of a pain in the arse but I don't see how its the most important thing in thw world and I'm guessing people are pretty use to it.

Yes, on hearing that this morning the reaction round my breakfast table was exactly that - but tory councillors seem to have a warped view point about what matters/ what is a vote winner. we have just gone to fortnightly with the alternate week being recycling collection and it's fine. plus I thought the reason councils were doing this was to increase recycling as they have to pay so much for landfill

AFAIK upping the recycling was to tick boxes, millions has been poured into it, but depending on where you live, it goes to the same landfill tips as the usual rubbish.
Tis all a huge load of bollocks.
If they can find the money for this, why are they not putting more money into far more important services?

Yes its a good if it creates more jobs but that money has been taken away froma lot of other services that are better for the enviroment. While annoying, fornightly bin collections were prgressive. And a lot of councils will be putting recycling back to fortnightly meaning no extra staff are needed

YANBU. There are far more important things to spend money on - like education, children's services, etc. In the case of our council, not only has it sacked all of its staff and rehired then for lower salaries and worse terms and conditions but it has also taken itself to a public inquiry for letting a waste management contract which required an incinerator and then refusing its contractor permission for the incinerator which the council mandated in the first place.

If they waste further money by adding in another bin collection then I will be really cross.

Eric Pickles has a really warped idea of what is important to most of the country outside essex I think.

It's pissed me right off. Our council has cut SN funding ans slashed Youth Serivces to the bone. All 3 of my daughter's flatmates lost their jobs in YS this year. They've spent a fortune on arranging an integrated service encouraging people to recycle more, with weekly collections for recyclables and food waste (which I wholeheartedly support btw)...all of that is now wasted with this stupid populist move.

It's more interesting to see what they do keep funding rather than collect bins, I think the Govt naively didn't realise that Councils would cut the stuff that would make Govt look bad fast.

Voters who do not need education or care services, and that's probably the majority (someone correct me if not), tend to mostly/only see the tidyness, social order aspects of their local council. This is a way of wooing them, while doing away with much of many would now see as a social contract between state and individual.

Some may say that it was set to happen even without a recession, and the recession is a darn good excuse for Mr Pickles' indulgences.

Shocking move to please Daily Heil readers who genuinely only care about issues that might affect their cossetted little lives. It is a minor inconvenience having fortnightly collections which is easily solved by having LESS WASTE. It fucking infuriates me that Tory scum still pander to the backward views of middle englanders instead of considering the wider economic and environmental issues. I have genuine hatred for these people. Ex ILs prime example: only give a shit about policies which directly affect their lives and no consideration for the greater good.

Our council are threatening the opposite, they want to go to fortnightly rubbish, weekly food recycling.
This would be just about ok (don't really want another bin in the kitchen), if the general recycling was any use.
It isn't, they only take bottles, tins and paper. Its plastic bottles and cardboard that I want shot of.

We have a child in disposable nappies and still don't fill our bin in 2 weeks, wtf is the point of collecting every week when everyone has had YEARS to adapt to less frequent collections?!

YADNU - I thought exactly the same thing - round here we have weekly black bin collections but our green recycling bins are only collected monthly! I can easily go 2 or even 3 weeks before filling my black bin but the green ones are full within a week.

It is a bizarre use of scarce public funds to go down this route, and I hope the great voting British public can see it for the cynical vote-grabbing move that it is.
