So DD got me up at 4am this morning so I could drive her to the tube for 5am as she was going into London with her friend (1st time alone!) to
try to get wristbands for a book signing by the One Direction pop group.

WHSmith in Shepherds Bush (London) was opening at 7am this morning so screaming girls 'fans' could purchase the book and get a wristband which would allow them to get their book signed by the band at 2pm this afternoon.

Now after they had left and I got home from the train station, I checked online only to see a tweet from WHSmith saying that they had given out all the wristbands for the book signing by midnight last night! Most people getting up early to travel into town would have been in bed by then so like us, would not have seen that message and what the hell were they doing giving them out 7 hours early anyway?

DD wanted to be sure and waited in the queue for over two hours before someone bothered to come out and tell them the wristbands were all gone.

AIBU to think WHSmith were completely unfair and disappointed a lot of young girls by doing this. Not to mention the money wasted in travel costs. It seems that because it would have been mostly teenage girls queueing, they do not matter that much so they don't give a shit about they have travelled.

reminds me of the faff that was the HP Premiere. TBF that was about crowd control and you could kind of see it.

however, i think that WHS are bang out of order. they had total control over this, your DD followed the rules and you can only assume that someone gave in and handed out all the wristbands last night to avoid a scene.

you are quite right that it seems like they don't care about the huge cost to the girls who followed the rules- a days travel card, plus eats is a lot out of pocket money.

I suggest you HUNT DOWN the Cheif Exec of WHS and find out whether they really do care about their book buying, stationery buying teenage customers.

YANBU, it's very annoying . . . but on the other hand, you can't protect her from the disappointments in life, and she probably will remember it in years to come as an exciting rite of passage (travelling to London alone etc).

TBH the signing itself would probably have been a disappointment too, I remember waiting for hours at HMV to see Pulp signing books, then realising I didn't have the stamina or volume to fight my way through the crowd to get anywhere close!

It's a lovely day, take her shopping (or whatever you do for fun) and forget about it :)

Is this the WHSmith in Westfields as i there is not another one is Shepherds Bush, Westfields is locked at night as far as i know so they would not have been able to get into the shopping centre till it opened anyway in the morning...

Cheeky looks like some wristbands had to be bought acc to 1d website. Whs are well out of order as their website says wristbands to be given out on day of signing from 7am.

I'd complain about this, not fair at all. It cost you so much and they should have been more open with their communications. If they were handing out wristbands last night they should have stated that on their website.
This happened to me a few years ago when I supervised my little sister and her friends on a trip to HMV Oxford Street to see the High School Musical cast. The wristbands were handed out the night before and they'd forgotten to put it on their website before or after. Cue hundreds of people showing up who couldn't get tickets. We waited around at the barriers, took a few photos and then I took them all down to McDonalds for lunch and let them have a look round the shops so that it wasn't a totally wasted trip. I was fuming though!
