I don't fully understand how this benefit is allocated. Am I right in thinking it's for people who have been diagnosed terminally ill, and so can no longer work, or claim JSA, and need medical costs met during their last days/months/years? And so the Tories are actually saying there is a time limit of 12 months in which to die of a terminal illness, after which the benefit ceases, even if you're still alive?

I only ask for clarity because it seems so unbelievable that this could be the case. Then I remember they're a bunch of cunts, and it doesn't seem quite so far fetched after all.

I just had to read the linked article a couple of times as I found it hard to believe. Maybe I'm a bit slow or something, I just found it beyond belief.

I guess the government are hoping to rely on not getting any comeback from dead people?

i'm shocked by this!!

i mean if you don't die within 12 months wave goodbye to benefits

It happens already though, if you receive DLA under the special rules (for terminal illnesses) and you live past the payment term it stops.

Can someone clarify for me...so if someone is terminally ill and takes longer than 12 months to die...their benefits will stop? Have I read that right? o_0

that is basically what has been said so far. so far it is just in the works so i am hoping enough out cry will get it abandoned. but yeah it actually says if you die in six months you wont be affected [boak].
i honestly dont know what to say to that, imagine getting that letter. sorry old chap know your dying and all, but times are tough so if you dont die soon you will lose your cash because quite frankly you are taking to long about it, and just like the unemployed and the disabled you are the new drain on society so toodle pip and all, the tories. har har har.

No votes in dead people, whereas if you remove benefits from the living they tend to vote against you

Fuck me. Just when you wonder if this government could stoop any lower...they exceed expectations.

This has actually made me feel sick. What is classed as terminally ill? Is it someone who has a prognosis with a certain amount of time to live, or just someone with a serious illness that can't be cured? I only ask because my Mum has cancer, it's not going to go anywhere but she's not in any imminent danger right now (so to speak) so I don't know if it applies to her.

spookshowangellovesit · 21/09/2011 13:15

apparently someone who suffers from a progressive disease and their deathcan reasonably be expected within six months

Ah, so it only applies to the ones who are unreasonable and don't die within 6 months. That's ok then.

Good grief. Government stoops to a new low.

Although I don't know why I'm surprised - their new disabilty benefits assessment is already telling terminally ill people 'tough, you need to be on Jobseeker's'.

Sad and Angry in equal measure. This is utterly vile.

This is what makes me feel it's pointless applying for DLA - I'm house and/or bed bound with ME - had it for most of my life, but it's only been this severe in the last few years - FINALLY got a diagnosis in May. Still waiting to see Neurologist, still waiting for a Social Services visit to assess our needs - what's the fucking point though when people who're dying get treated like this? It certainly holds true that money does not equate to having manners, class, or especially ethics, it seems.

I don't understand on what ground their benefits will be cut?

I feel sick.
