to not want a haircut?

Hairdressers are scary.
I need a haircut and am booked in for 2pm today for a dry cut, but even this is now worrying me and I've almost cancelled twice.

Trouble is that they never really listen to what I tell them and end up doing what they want to do, which is to make me look like a complete idiot so that when I come out I have to find the nearest puddle and swish my hair about in that.

I have curly hair and when cut it tends to go straight at the top of my head but then puff out at the bottom like a really bad 80's style and this is the style most hairdressers will do, despite me asking them not to.

Also they look scary. Most of them are very very young, plastered in make-up with bright yellow hair, jangly bracelets and overpowering perfume.

And they expect me to TALK to them!

I hate everything about it and usually get someone to come to the house but she's not answering her phone (probably because she knows it's me) or I cut it myself, but this time it needs a proper cut and I'm bricking it.

Tell me I don't have to go - I don't wanna!

YANBU....dont go!!!

I always say to my hairdresser, just take the ends off............she always cuts about 3 bloody inches off!! Hence I only go twice a year :)

And...there's only so many times one can say "so, are you going on holiday this year" :)

I feel the same!

I hate the hairdressers. I had a shocking cut in Toni and Guy once. It was nothing like I asked for and their response was "well it's how they're wearing their hair in London". Really! I don't give a shit how "they're" wearing their hair in London!

I've found a nice place, with nice middle aged women who are happy to do a dry trim and tidy up long layers and don't try anything artistic.

I don't want to talk, I'm not going out tonight, I don't want to tell you how old my children are or which school they go to, I don't want to hear about your holiday or talk about mine.

I would just like to get through the annual hair cut with my nerves in tact and without having to look at myself in that huge mirror for an hour!

Could you find a salon that does free consultations and then book in for another day if you like them?

Or see if any have stylists that are particularly good with curly hair before you are trapped in the chair?

Whereabouts are you? Maybe people have some recommendations....

But if I don't go then what do I do with my hair which needs cutting?

I've asked dh and he said no - the bastard. I might give my ds a pair of scissors, he'd probably do a better job.

Oooooh no, no consultations. Then they'll want to 'style' it which will be even worse!

I'm being charged a tenner for this cut, that's all I'm willing to pay and if they put a hairdryer anywhere near it then I'm out the door and they don't get paid.

I've got 45mins before I set off (need to get a bottle of water and a hat in case it goes tits up)

I hate going to the hairdressers so much that I cut my own.

I hate the smell & the inane chat.

Used to have a lady come round to me-that always went OK tbh.

Its like going for a smear - the thought of it is worse than the actual thing.

I actually like getting my hair washed and cut, but not the talking, so I wear my glasses there, take them off and drift into my own world because I can't see whats going on in the mirror and cant make out what they're saying.

Go on, go - then its out of the way for another 8 months weeks

I've got curly hair too - it's a nightmare isn't it? I remember vividly one hairdresser who freaked out when my straightened hair was washed, and the blow-dryed and straightened my hair again before she would cut it!

I want to get a splitender - they just take off the ends. They seem to be out of stock everywhere at the moment though.

Where do live - anywhere near London? I know / go to an amazing non threatening hairdresser. Only two of them in salon -'one bloke, one female. I've been going to bloke for 10yrs. Trendy if you want trendy, straightforward if you want straightforward.

Ah.... Just seen you'll only pay £10.

He's much more than that (around £50 I reckon but don't know actual coat as I pay for cut & colour every time which comes to £100 so half that for cut?).

But he is very very good..

No, dont give DS the scissors. A few weeks ago I moaned to DH that my fringe was a bit long and he took the wallpaper shears to them . Believe me, it was not a good look although I quite like it now :)

It has to be cut today as I'm at a Bath meet-up on Sat. Otherwise I'd just leave it until my usual one answers her phone.

It's the fact that I have to go into town too, so when I leave the salon looking like an 80's pisstake people will SEE me.

I'm definitely taking a hat.

Oh I'm in the same predicament I HATE the whole experience I reckon last time I had it done was 8 moths ago I booked mobile hairdresser last week got the courage up and she bailed with an hour to spare

Now I've booked her for tonight and I'm thinking of calling it off..... I'm getting colour too

I think it originates from a tragic childhood were my mother used to try and cut my hair it looked crap then she wouldn't take me to the hairdressers then I'd refuse to let her cut it so never had it cut from the age of about 7 to about 14 I looked shit

I tell you something else(rant)...when hairdresser tells you that your hair will grow quicker if you trim it regulary IT'S BOLLOCKS!!!
Hair is DEAD, it DOES NOT burst into life when you have it cut....stop spreading your horrible hairdresser LIES"!!!!

It's taken me years to find a hairdresser I like and now I won't let anyone else near my hair. I go to a lady's house and she does it, it's much more relaxed and friendly that way. I HATE Toni & Guy.

I've cried once due to hairdresser not listening to me and cutting top layers WAY too short and basically giving me a mullet, so know how you feel.

However, I never make an appt until I can see that the hairdressers themselves have 'normal' hair. Also I take in pictures. Ask them what they've done at the end and write it down. That way you can ask the next one to do the same. Also you probably need to spend more than £10! Free consultations are good. A friend got a late available appt in London for £25 instead of £75 and said it was WELL worth it.

You could use my solution and just never get it cut. In the last decade it has been cut twice at a hairdressers. Occasionaly me or my mum will have a stab at it to get the split ends out and its much better this way. However my hair is usually anywhere between the base of my back and my knees so you may not want hair that long.

Oooh yes and when we were 16 my BF got her hair cut just before the prom. It was too her elbows and she wanted a trim. The guy did a BOB! She spent the whole day in tears and that put the fear of god into me about hairdressers.

snapes I do my own too.

Very long hair ,not quite as long as yours though.

On youtube they have instructions on how to do a ponytail cut ,that is a variant of what I do.

That might help op

Did it!

It was ok. No-one else in there which was good. The hairdressers looked normal. She took 10mins to cut my hair. They talked to each other and left me alone. So all good BUT
She combed out my hair so it went frizzy, cut it and then didn't put anything on to tame it so it was lucky I had some serum in my pocket.

I gave her a tenner. Do you tip? I would have felt stupid giving her a tenner and then some change, so I just handed over my £10. Was that mean?

Still, it's done now and doesn't need cutting again now until....oooooooh.....another year or so.

When I shall do it myself
