I was ranting about discussing the economy calmly with DH last night - if the tax on fuel (petrol and diesel) is cut in half, that would take the price per litre down to an average of 98p.

I can't believe Cameron still can't work out how significant it is!
Cost to shop of items will go down, cost to supplier will go down, cost of getting anywhere will go down, people will shop i nthe shops, business won't go out of business - it's like a domino effect - everything relies on the price of fuel.
even going on about people not using their cars, but using public transport instead - they can't because the price of each ticket has gone up because of the duty on fuel One of the ways to make public transport attractive to people is to reduce the cost of it....

That's all well and good but if people can't get jobs they aren't going to spend money in shops, which then invigorates the economy and provides more jobs. All these private and public sector job cuts are a false economy.

yes, that's true - but a big reason why the jobs aren't available is because of all the companies that have gone out of business because of the price of fuel.

think about it: every time a company goes into administration, the jobs have gone - even a small shop could employ 5 or 10 people.

It;s a huge vicious circle, and one of the things that will breakthrough it is reducing the duty on fuel - one of the few things that the government has control over.

Lots of civil service jobs have been cut though and they aren't dependent on the price of fuel - though I do agree the amount of tax on fuel is a bit mad.

yes, the civil service jobs have been cut as a way of saving money.
but that's necessary because the government pissed away all our money on bailing the bankers out.
I would love to know what other industry they would ever do that for - they've done the exact opposite with most others, and continue to want to, with the nhs and with education.
