To not know whether to tell these parents re drugs and their daughter

Hello.
I run a small accommodation business and I was asked if I would allow a girl to hold a 21st birthday "gathering" there with a dozen or so of her friends.
I was very reluctant, for obvious reasons (most of our visitors are families and couples) but her parents offered a very hefty security deposit against breakages and she agreed no loud music or riotous behaviour. So they turned up this weekend.
Her parents also came down to drop her off, came in to see me to reassure me, and paid for the whole four-day holiday for all the kids. The parents seemed terribly nice, the birthday seemed a bit of a posh hippie.
Anyway, the stay went off OK, so I gave them back the deposit and then came clean-up time. In the kitchen on a shelf by the cooker we found a small freezer-type ziplock bag with a square of magazine paper inside it folded into an envelope. Inside that was about a teaspoonful of chunky off-white crystals.
We then had a frantic search down every side of sofa, under every rug, etc etc and found two loose white pills on the floor in the sitting room. Which may of course have been aspirin.
Do I complain to her, do I complain to her parents, do I call the police? Bearing in mind this is my business and livelihood and I really could do without it being publicised as a drug den. I'm obviously furious, but maybe I was being naive to think this wouldn't happen? Imagine if my next guests had found the drugs? Also - can anyone guess what the crystals were, I've never seen anything like it. Advice would be very welcome please, thanks everyone!

Sounds like MDMA or maybe mephedrone or something.

I wouldn't do anything. Sure you got your money and no harm was done to the place.

Throw it down the toilet and forget about it.

worraliberty Tue 13-Sep-11 23:33:59

Drug den lol?

Welcome to mumsnet CrossroadsMotel.

She is 21, therefore an adult, not a child, why on earth would you tell her parents?

As there were numerous guests there, you cant prove who lost their stash. You just need to make sure whenever you have guests, no matter who they are, how how respectable they look, that you clean thoroughly afterwards to remove the evidence from previous occupants, as you have done. smile

StonedRosie Tue 13-Sep-11 23:40:53

Flush it and forget about it.

HairyGrotter Wed 14-Sep-11 07:36:33

Sell it

I wouldn't think further on it, party was held, nothing was trashed, happy days.

LoveInAColdClimate Wed 14-Sep-11 07:40:16

Flush and don't think about it anymore! It was a 21st party, they're adults. I don't think the house is going to turn into an opium den, it'll be fine.

Is mephedrone illegal?
So, Aibu to be narked at the girl at all? She swore blind she was just coming down for a lovely country break with her friends, said no one else would take her, please please etc etc and was backed up by her parents, who phoned me to reassure me AND came to visit to square it all with me. I even gave her a bottle of bubbly and a birthday card.
Then it turns out they used my property/business (which is right near my house and kids) to take drugs in all weekend, they all left looking pale and ill, barely able to string a sentence together, and were so careless/off their heads they left 2 lots of drugs behind in the house. All this when I had a family and five kids coming in to stay that same day. Do I just accept it with a shrug or should there not be some sort of consequences?

Cammelia Wed 14-Sep-11 16:06:37

As you are not/were not responsible for her moral upbringing I would suggest you don't waste your time thinking about it.

dangalf Wed 14-Sep-11 16:09:33

I think you're over-reacting here tbh. Just get rid of the drugs and move on with your life.

Also, mephedrone was actually legal fairly recently. Not sure if they rushed through the law change or not though.

Insomnia11 Wed 14-Sep-11 16:12:20

I'd leave pale and ill if I got pissed though.

spiderslegs Wed 14-Sep-11 16:13:14

Mephedrone is illegal but not crystaline, methamphetamine maybe, crack?

Either way, flush it all down the loo, don't worry too much about it as nothing did actually go badly wrong & don't take any more bookings from groups of young people.

Can't trust the buggers.

BarmyBiscuit Wed 14-Sep-11 16:13:30

Move on. If you get a group of 21 year olds together then chances are there will be drugs involved. I also wouldn't tell the parents either.

PamBeesly Wed 14-Sep-11 16:16:09

There are so many legal highs on the market it could be any number of things so maybe not illegal, although still drugs. I would just bin it, flush it and forget it. She is 21, so an adult. Maybe think carefully before you have another party in your house.

lesley33 Wed 14-Sep-11 16:17:51

You don't know that they were taking drugs all weekend. They will have been drinking and may have been up very late accounting for them looking pale and ill when they left.

You found a very small amount of a drug. It may only have been taken by 1 person, or even if a few the girl herself may not know friends took drugs.

The fact that the place wasn't trashed and there was no disturbance tends to indicate that this wasn't a weekend spent taking lots of drugs.

You could call the police. However as you don't know whose it is amongst the party, all the police can do is question the group and try to get someone to confess that its their drugs. If nobody confesses the police will not be able to do anything.

I would tend to forget about it.

TheProvincialLady Wed 14-Sep-11 16:18:11

If it was me I wouldn't do anything (certainly not tell her parents FFS) but when I was 16 younger a friend of mine left a ziplock bag of talcum powder in her jacket (which she used to try and cover her spots, little innocentgrin) and left the jacket in a pub. When she went to retrieve it she was told that it had been taken to the police as they thought it was cocaine, and she was lucky that the police didn't take it any further. You are well within your rights to complain to the police if you want to, but I think I would be inclined to chalk it up to experience and next time trust your instinsts regarding who you do or don't let out your property to.

banana87 Wed 14-Sep-11 16:19:36

You said the weekend went off fine, and you even refunded the deposit, meaning they obviously did not get too out of hand. You can in no way prove the drugs (if they are drugs) were the girls, so no, I would not be saying anything to anyone. YANBU to be pissed that people were doing drugs though, and maybe even think twice before allowing a young group of people stay again. Do realise though, that even couples and families may come with drugs and it is not limited to young people.

lesley33 Wed 14-Sep-11 16:21:49

And as said above there are legal drugs that people can buy for a high. It may be one of these.

grovel Wed 14-Sep-11 16:22:24

Try the drugs.

porcamiseria Wed 14-Sep-11 16:24:50

glad some common sense answers

flush the drugs, and leave it

what do you expects with a 21st!!!!

porcamiseria Wed 14-Sep-11 16:26:26

Do I just accept it with a shrug or should there not be some sort of consequences?

this is why I stay in nice impersonal Premier Inns rather than family run B&B, this type of shite

mumeeee Wed 14-Sep-11 16:58:25

She is 21 and an adult. No need to tell her parents. Just flush the drugs down the toilet and forget about it. DD2 doesn't take drugs but she looks pale after a Kate night party, The birthday girl herself might not have been taking drugs.
