AIBU?

to think that if 9/11 had happened anywhere else we wouldn't be remembering it ten years on?

... or probably even one year on.

I am not taking away from how horrific it was for all who were directly affected.

But if it had been anywhere but America the world would have moved on and we wouldn't be facing wall-to-wall coverage ten years on. Even if it had been the UK only the UK would be remembering.

Really? You don't think that the world would remember/mourn for/commemorate the almost 3000 people who died?

are you that unaware of what actually happened? Of course you're being unreasonable!

YABU and I am not really sure what point you are trying to make.

YABU

The Boxing Day tsunami and the Japanese quake/tsunami will be remembered 10 years on, just to name a couple. The devastating loss of nearly 3000 people DESERVES wall to wall coverage 10 years on IMO.

YABU... . We collectively commemorate anniversaries of other catastrophic global events. The Holocaust, the massacres in Rwanda, Hiroshima....

biwi no I don't. I think that there may have been a mention in passing that "ten years ago 3000 people were killed," and there may have been a programme to commemorate on the day, but weeks and weeks of coverage? no, not at all.

Shock What sort of world do you live in because you clearly don't have a clue about this one!

Seriously? You think it would be forgotten if it were anywhere else? Thank fuck everyone thinks YABU, or I'd be seriously worried.

PS there will be posters on here who knew people who died in 9/11. Might want to consider that.

Yabu nearly 3000 people dead, I'm sure we will be remembering the London bombings on the 10 year anniversary

I think it was a pretty momentous thing tbh

I attended the Bali bombing memorial in 2004 and Irrc it's an annual event.

the point I am making is that the reason why we remember 9/11 is because it was perpitrated against America.

As individuals we remember how terrible it was/where we were when we heard what had happened - of course we do.

But as a whole if it was somewhere else it would not be commemorated on this scale.

There hasn't been wall to wall coverage and you don't have to listen to any of it.

We will remember the London bombings - but will any other nation?

I see where the OP is coming from. The constant docus and conspiracy theories - which I don't see televised every year on the anniv of Eniskillen or Bishopsgate or Warrington or Lockerbie or indeed Aberfan

YABU. as others have said we remember other events too. It's not only the sad death of 3000 people but the way the attacks have changed the whole world.

The 2004 Bali memorial was a nine day event btw , is that too long?

I agree with you, wannabe. It isn't that it doesn't deserve commemoration. It isn't that at all. It's that, sadly, we DON'T commemorate all the victims of all the wars and atrocities and natural disasters that have happened ever, or even in the last 20 years, even. I think part of the reason why we remember some and not others is because the media helps us. And the media, as an international community, is either outright US-controlled or heavily US-influenced.

But it wasn't jusyt Americans who died and I am sure the hijackers knew it would be other nationalities who died.

SpamMarie · 10/09/2011 18:18

It's not just that a lot of people died, like in the Japanese or Haitian Earthquakes. It's that this tragic loss of life was entirely man-made, and a pivotal moment in history affecting many nations. Of course it will always be rememebered!

YABU

It was mass murder that was captured on film and many of us watched events unfold on T.V. in real time. I have no connection to any of the victims or families affected by 9/11 but I won't ever forget it. I would feel the same if it happened anywhere in the world.
