AIBU?

To wonder what the govt has planned to punish those NOT on benefits?

This is not the first time cutting benefits has been suggested as a punishment. How are the government proposing to punish parents who don't tackle truancy efficiently that aren't on benefits exactly? Just like the assertion that the rioters should lose benefits, yes because they were ALL on benefits weren't they? Hmm

Once again the government fuels the totally untrue daily mail esque belief that all of society's ills lie at the feet of benefits claimants. Apparently they are the root of all evil, eh? Hmm

Not one of the policies publicised has said what would happen to those who do not claim benefits.

Money designed for basic sustenance should not be removed imo. At the end of the day it is the children that will suffer from these measures.

Conversely, I noted wryly that I must have done something really bad as I - along with every family where someone earns over about 40K a year - am having my kids' child benefit removed. Next year.

Am I the only one to find it amusing that a load of totally innocent middle-class people with blameless children are suffering something too dreadful for them to actually dare to inflict on those whose kids do burn down shops etc?

Pah.

Yes but if you did get cross and burn down a shop there's nothing to take away is there? Wink

interesting question,
reminds me of EMA, how students who got EMA would be punished by having it taken away, but a student not on EMA who did same "crime" no punishment.

Hmmm. Punishing people for committing crimes while pushing them into a life of crime due to high and growing umemployment. Only the tories would do this. Cunts.

On that assertion breadandbutterfly I am being punished for having an autistic child next eyar becuase the tax credits disability segment is going down by £50 a week for mr dla claimants.

but that's not what OP is saying is it?

One punishment for everyone regardless of which part of society they come from surely?

And yes, what Custy said is exactly what just a few of the famillies I used to work with would have done; not forgetting the ones who were too pissed to make their kids go to school and whose addiction would trump the kids every time.

i really dont unerstnd the problem here, why should be punish those people who tax dodge and don't contribute to society?

Report
Peachy · 09/09/2011 17:07

And yes OM

and the costs to teh state of the associated healthcare and homelesness are not real money that would outweigh the financial penalties.

Honest, like.

Glitterknickaz · 09/09/2011 17:08

Yep, we're getting that penalty as two of ours qualify for middle rate care rather than high, Peachy.

Not what it's about though. Publicly coming up with new 'punishments' that cannot be evenly applied across society for the same crime is just completely out of order.

oh well at least we won't be punished for that crime then, as dd gets HR, sure they will think of someway to punish her for being disabled though.

Exactly Glitter

My point was that it didn't make sense as a 'punishment' if it was being applied randomly to people who had committed no crime other than earning over 40K per year. So I'm agreeing with the OP.

Clearly deterrants are needed but this should have been thought through more.

YABU People not on benefits can be punished for their children playing truant. Fines and imprisonment have been dished out before. We're all quick to complain about the 'entitlement culture' and I'm not surprised, therefore, if the response is to move it more into a 'responsibility culture'. Benefits are conditional.... always have been... but that's often forgotten.

I'm not sure the child benefit/tax credits cuts are a punishment Hmm
(not to say I absolutely agree with them)

Cogito, so how do you propose people who aren't on benefits get punished for the same thing?
There are plenty of working poor who are just above benefits thresholds, if their child has a strong truancy record how are they going to be punished?

If they want to hurt the pockets of criminals on benefits, why can't they just fine them so everyone can have the same punishment?

There must be people on benefits already paying fines for stuff, and I thought there was some system like with bankrupcy where you had to give them details of your outgoings to decide how much you have to pay back each week?

FFS.

This government REALLY HATES poor people. Their position is 'fuck off and die' coz we don't make much money out of you.

Cogito - the benefit level is design as a basic, basic means of 'surviving'. I don't know where to begin with the inanity of your last post. Stuck for choice.

Every Tory is a cunt.
