...in wanting my teenager to get out of bed?

It's nearly one o'clock... I've tried cajoling, encouraging, complaining, threatening, begging, reasoning, nagging, etc., but she's still lying there in a stupor. She has to be go back to school the day after tomorrow and I'm expecting her to be able to spring out of bed at 7 o'clock from then on! What are the chances?

it's still early for a teenager Grin mine has been getting up at about 3, lazy arse

She'll spring up because she has to the day after tomorrow.

Now, she's probably laying there thinking 'what's the point in getting up' if she has nothing planned.

My son just told me he will get up at half one! He was up to 5am. His sleep pattern is shot, he doesn't have to worry though as he has now finished college and is off to Uni in three weeks.

I would love a lazy arse teenager, mine is up at 6-7 every morning and bored by 8 am. I'd get loads more done if he'd stay in his pit!

Teenagers need more sleep than full grown adults - teens are like large toddlers - their brains are growing and half of all the risky things they do is because their cognitive abilities are impaired due to lack of sleep. google it.

UABU to insist she gets up. She needs to rest as she will be up at the crack of dawn next week. Leave her be, she's not an adult with an adult brain.

Well woollyideas, that's a toughy, I'm someone that loves lying in bed late on the weekends, got nowhere to be, nothing much to do, but just chill. So, most times, I find myself telling my boy, for cryin out loud, sleep on the weekends morning being up at 6 am and stamping his feet around no good when you watch last movie at 2 am, duh! So by experience, as a teenager once myself, slept till noon on weekends and got up at 6 am during school week, did the same once started to work, still carrying on.

So, medically speaking, teenagers go through a whole slew of changes, physical and especially hormonal, so the more sleep the better, so I've heard, I agree and disagree but I've always heard sleeping that long at the end of the day is that it is needed by the body. So let her come into her own, it might be just a phase, teenage rebellion stuff you know, and unless you have somewhere to go then I guess measures are required, but otherwise just like the expression let the dog lie!

Don't shoot the messenger LOL!
Later CD

I leave mine to get up when she wants if she has nothing planned. Wish she would afford me the same courtesy. I can easily lay in bed until after noon on a weekend but she tries to get me up if she is going to work. Angry

I do wonder why I need as much sleep as a teen.

I am reading this thread with complete and total envy Envy , and an offer to trade: I'll take any of your lazy teens who sleep all day if you'll take my two lovely DCs who were up this morning at 5:30 AM!! Grin

If I complain in 10 years that my kids sleep too long slap me!

teens are like large toddlers...

They certainly are. Food fads, temper tantrums, the empathetic ability of a slice of toast...

My son sets his alarm for 1 pm, so that he doesn't sleep too late Grin

Why do you want her to get up? She'll just lie on the sofa in a mood. Let her sleep, then when you hear her getting up, go out for a walk (without her) so that she's in a better mood when you get home.

The human brain is subject to massive hormonal changes in adolescence, including melatonin which affects sleep patterns. Many places around the world inc some schools in Kent and Sunderland (?) have later start times in recognition of this and their exam results improved. IMO it is as mistaken to make teens fit the adult sleep pattern as it would be for toddlers. Let them sleep.

It does appear to wear off at 18, make the most of it. Ds almost 18 is up by 8am most mornings lately.

Leave her be. I don't understand this need to wake others up just because you think they should be up

Put very loud music on. That's what my parents used to do :)

No I think YNBU. I know what posters mean about getting some peace but OOH I get really fed up with mine not helping and treating my house like a hotel.

I, too would love to stay in bed all day but then nothing would get done.

I woke my 13 DS at about 10.

Also mine wouldn't get much sleep as I would be moaning and ranting around the place by 1pm.

"Put very loud music on. That's what my parents used to do"

Why would they do that?

My ILs always made my husband get up at the weekend?

What´s the point?

He would then go out so that he didn´t have to be with them!

Might as well have left him sleeping!

It wasn't allowed to stay in bed past 9am at my parents - even when I was 18 :( Apparantly I was "wasting the day"..........

I would let my teens lie in a bit later than 9am, but certainly not past lunchtime as I would expect them to be doing something (working, sport. seeing friends, study, chores) at some point on a weekend day

Mine just surfaced. It's the last day of the holidays and I have enjoyed my last lie in for a long time.
