AIBU?

to be considering past life regression?

I love messing about in boats off UK coasts or the eastern seaboard of the US and in the Med.

HOWEVER, merely the names 'South China Sea' and 'Cape Horn' fill me with dread, as does the thought of the extremely deep waters of the southern Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

I'm not likely to venture into these regions in any kind of sea-going vessel but, nevertheless, I'm wondering why I have this seemingly irrational fear of the deep in those particular parts of the world.

Would it be unreasonable to explore whether past life regression can shed any light on my fears? Have you had any experience of recalling past lives and, if so, has it helped you in your present life? Is it something that you would like to do (someday, sometime, when you get round to it) or are you disbelieving of the concept of reincarnation?

Also have been places i definately feel a connection to, just so random, but feel very drawn to there

Well it'll be a complete waste of money,as it's all utter nonsense, but it's your money.

I've thought about this too! Mainly because I'm terrified of a place in the UK, can't say where because it'll out me but a few people have suggested it.

No experience but will be watching this with interest

Have you ever done any ancestry study? Strange longings/revulsions of my own have had light shed on them through discovering things about my ancestors. Could all be codswallop but fascinating nonetheless.

I've had past life regression (as part of my training to become a hypnotherapist). Mine was quite uneventful and not very interesting at all, but a few in the group had some great 'memories' surface.

If it's something that interests you and you can afford it - why not?!

When people do this bullshit past life regression, why are they always Cleopatra or Charlemagne, and never a sewer cleaner or a peasant with the plague?
Thats what I want to know.

If you know anything about sailing, it's quite sensible to be shit scared of Cape Horn!

Why do you think your fear of the most dangerous waters is irrational?

I ascribe to the Jungian theory of the collective unconscious Vivi but I don't feel that my fears can be attributed to racial memory.

There's more than a few vicars/schoomasters (back in their day they multi-tasked) and a bishop in the family tree which may account for my interest in theology and spirituallity but I'm more inclined to the dark arts.

There's also a seafaring Dane but, as far can be ascertained, he didn't fall off the Kon-Tiki or get washed overboard at the bottom of the world.

But do make sure that you have q good chat with the regressionist first make sure he or she is fully briefed about your current life and what you're hoping to get from the session. XYou generally get much better and more interesting revelations that way!

Report
Sandalwood · 02/09/2011 16:27

Yes, same as you get more revelations from a medium or fortune teller if you tell them a lot about yourself.

I think my fears are irrational because I love boating so much Sandalwood.

There are plenty of other areas that pose as much - if not more - danger to the unwary than Cape Horn seeker.

As far as I know, not many cruise liners go around Cape Horn but some go near on jaunts to Antartica. I'd very much like to go on one of them, but my fear is such that there's no way I could contemplate it.

My SIL went for some past-life regression in an effort to stop smoking of all things. Something went horribly wrong, she became convinced she'd been sexually abused by her father (which was a 'false memory' - a risk with these things, apparently), upset the entire family, turned to drink and, the last time I saw her, she was a very sick and very miserable alcoholic.

Not only a load of old bollocks but, in her case, quite nasty consequences

You probably are BU as it most likely is a load of horseshit but I'd love to have past life regression done as I do find it interesting and would quite like to believe it's true Blush My username's actually from a novel about reincarnation where the characters' past life traumas affect their present day lives. The idea of past life regression's fascinated me ever since.

I've had a birth regression and it was fascinating. I think it's a bit like assisted dreaming/daydreaming, rather than anything else, and can give you remarkable insights into your subconscious and the stories that you tell yourself about who you are.

I'd love to have this done! I believe in all sorts of hokery-pokery stuff. I did my family tree back to 1685 too. Love it!

I suspect that there are more than a fair few Cleopatras under section at the present time, Siamo. Not quite so sure about Charlemagne in the UK's secure establishments but maybe there's a significant number in their French counterparts?

I'm fully prepared to discover that I ended one life as a plague ridden peasant; my fear might be explained if I was bitten by a flea that jumped on board a boat moored in the South China Sea

I don't know about you, but I think I'd be quietly horrified to discover I was formerly Elizabeth 1 or Catherine the Great although I share one of the traits of those monarchs.

I know a hypnotist who has does past-life regressions. He is very non-new-agey and says he doesn't know whether people are really regressing to a past life (if such a thing exists), or dredging up stuff from their subconscious, or whether it's some kind of placebo effect. He says - and I have no reason to doubt him - he's obtained good results for some (not all) people, for example, some phobias or unexplained problems have been cured after going through the process. I like that he's open-minded about it and doesn't claim to know how it works, nor that it works for everyone. I feel simultaneously open-minded and skeptical on the subject, if that's possible!

That's exactly how I feel Happy. I don't discount anything but that doesn't mean I believe in everything.

What Happyfinnish said. I do this for people and I don't have any belief in it. I am not remotely new-agey.

What I think (note: not believe) happens is that the regression allows the client to incorporate some of their personality traits that they don't want to allow in real life. There is therapy before and after and I don't advertise this service. It is very common for people to have more difficult personality traits that they treat as a different part of themselves - eg. an angry part and this may be shown in regression as a male figure like a soldier (Oh look I was an aggressive man in a past life). Or as a wise-woman figure (this one is very common)

I only use it as a part of psychotherapy and not on it's own.

I've said this before (about homeopathy - which I don't do Wink) that I don't care what the 'real truth' is - I only care that people make the journey to good mental health and if they use the placebo effect or dance around with bells or incorporate a wise-woman into their conscious then that is fine by me.

My mum has done a few. She's never been Cleopatra or anybody like that! Weirdly though more than once the same past life has come up, and it's not that she had mentioned the past story to the next person (therapist? Hypnotist?) - it was something quite specific as well, which was weird. It would have been a massive coincidence if they'd both made it up.
