to give a second hand console game as a present?

A friend's child wants a wii game for their birthday. They haven't demanded it or anything it's just what they have requested.

Now normally for birthday presents I spend £10.

This game is available in game in their preowned section at £14.99, or in their new section at £32.99.

Now AIBU to purchase the preowned one for £14.99 or would it be better to give a £10 voucher towards the £32.99 as noway can I afford the full price one.

I am not sure that the parents will get the child to buy the used one anyway or not.

So what do I do?!?

Preowned is fine. I never buy my dd new games for her ds, it's just not worth it when it's the same exact thing but for much less money.

I think any of them would be fine. I certainly wouldn't have a problem with anyone giving my child a pre owned game, in fact that's mostly what I buy.

A gift card is also ok, they might see another game they would like better.

They should specify that 2nd hand is fine. And it IS fine. Just check that you get the instruction booklet with it!

Otherwise, just put a tenner in a card and say, 'Put it towards something you would like.'

In fairness to both parties - it's a 6 year old child even if they are aware of the cost of the game, I don't expect them to realise the "true" cost of what they are asking.

And the parents weren't around, so possibly no idea that is the gift list.

I did ask the question as: what would you like for your birthday? Not what would you like from us. Although I know what the parents are getting so not doubling up.

Glad to see preowned is acceptable I do prefer to give a gift rather than cash/voucher.

i have never bought a new game, i see it as a waste of money when you can get the game at a fraction of the price.

DH has only ever got 1 game new ( black ops and he was out at midnight to get it the freak)

No returns policy on pre-owned is the same as new from game. And all pre-owned has the same length warranty as new.

I will buy new from Game when there is £1/£2 in it, but when it's over half price I go for the pre-owned for ourselves.

Returns policy on pre-owned is fine. I've never had any problems taking games back on the odd occasion they haven't worked.
