I read that article in this mornings Grauniad. Think it's interesting, but as you say, unlikely to happen here.

'wealthy billionaires' - when you have a billion or ten, you won't miss donating one!

I was thinking more about people like Philip Green volunteering to pay more tax... do you think he might? Grin

Philip Green is resident in Monaco

It looks a good idea and I don't think anyone could argue against some wealth redistribution, but there is also a big proviso that the tax is efficiently collected and distributed to those needing it the most.

If they are really want to do it, I am sure there are better ways than merely imposing a higher tax.

Nice to read. It usually seems that the richer the person the less keen they are on paying taxes.
I find it sad that wealthy men/women give so much to charity (ego boost, maybe?) and yet when it comes to taxes move abroad and use every means possible to avoid paying anything.

mummytime · 30/08/2011 12:03

The people who give most to charity don't move to avoid tax (eg. Bill Gates or Warren Buffett). But then in the UK top tax payers pay a large percentage of tax, and they may not think the government make the best use of the money they get (that's why Charity is more attractive).

I heard a religious chap on radio 4 say rich people should give 20 per cent of their take home money to charity. Perhaps they should, but it wont catch on in England.

Jodianna · 30/08/2011 12:13

Very rich people get tax breaks for giving to charity.

chill1243 · 30/08/2011 12:14

Why dont Premier league footballers, who are on enrmous pay. start a charity of their own and give real payback? (They are mainly from working class backgrounds and know the score on poverty)
