To cancel going to Egypt (Dahab) as I've found out I'm 8 weeks pregnant

OK, so my sister-in-law (33) was booking a holiday to Egypt for 7 nights on her own (she doesn't have a boyfriend so fair enough that she wanted to get away) i offered to go out with her so it wasn't do daunting for the first 3 nights so she extended the break to 10 nights in total. I have just found out I'm pregnant with my first child therefore nervous to say the least, finding out a little later means I haven't been the most careful with drinking etc so I'm conscious I give this little bean the best chance. I've heard so many horror stories about bugs/poor sanitation etc and even though its only 3 nights away, I'm extremely nervous as getting back from Egypt isn't just a simple hop on a plane and you're home (e.g. France) .

Answers on a postcard please as I feel terrible, she was nervous about going away on her own anyway and now she's doing so for three extra nights.

dont be ridiculous! go, will be fine, its egypt not sierra leone

Personally I'd be packed by now and ticking the days off the calendar. I assume you're staying in a hotel? Unless you intend to be drinking from the Nile I'd doubt you have anything significant to worry about.

Ha cheers, granted I know I'm not entering a war zone, I have already decided not to go but appreciate the comment!

ObiWan Wed 24-Aug-11 15:33:09

You'll be fine. Lots of Egyptians get pregnant too grin.

And if you're going to go to fly/go on holiday, now is an ideal time to do it.

Pregnancy is not an illness.

ObiWan Wed 24-Aug-11 15:34:15

Sorry, x-posted with the bit where you've already cancelled blush

belgo Wed 24-Aug-11 15:34:48

That's a shame, not only for your sil, but for you as well. And unfair on your sil - did she know you were hoping to get pregnant? Not many women cancel their holidays due to pregnancy, unless they are ill already.

If you take the normal precautions, you should be fine.

DogsBestFriend Wed 24-Aug-11 15:35:56

How sad that you've decided not to go.

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 15:37:11

thanks for the advice everyone. The holiday is next week so I'm not over my 12 weeks. I didn't add that I'd been bleeding a bit and sick but hey appreciate comments anyway. I now just feel worse! ha ha

Crosshair Wed 24-Aug-11 15:39:43

Maybe try to sort something with her around the 20 week mark holiday wise? Hopefully everything will be fine with the pregnancy and you'll be feeling less sick by then to make it up to her.

MindtheGappp Wed 24-Aug-11 15:40:31

It is just a hop on the plane. You don't have to drink alcohol. You can have bottled water.

You are pregnant, not ill.

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions Wed 24-Aug-11 15:41:44

Have you been to the EPU and had everything confirmed as fine? If so, YABU. Not sure why you asked if you had already made up your mind. YANBU to prefer to stay home at this stage of pregnancy, but YABU to pull out of three little days away which has been booked and paid for and your sister was relying on. You should have sucked it up and gone, and you would probably have enjoyed yourself. FWIW I have been to N Africa hundreds of times including when pregnant and sanitation is fine. Drink bottled water and keep hands clean. No probs.

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 15:42:50

Thats what I've said, I can claim back the cost of my flight (covered by insurance) and have either offered the money as spending money for her or to go away for a couple of nights coming up to Christmas (christmas shopping in Bath or something) I know you all think I'm daft but hey, first kid, crapping myself, but understand comments

glastocat Wed 24-Aug-11 15:46:14

Are you sure your insurance will pay out?I've never heard of them paying out on pregnancy as a reason for cancellation.

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 15:46:38

yep, just been on the phone to them

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 15:46:54

p.s. Barclys premier life

glastocat Wed 24-Aug-11 15:49:04

Thats pretty lucky!

FWIW, I can kind of understand younot wanting to go away, but I went away for a last child free break at 27 weeks pg and look back on it now with VERY fond memories.

Crosshair Wed 24-Aug-11 15:49:45

I can understand why you dont feel like going, I felt crap for the first 16 weeks. Also for eveyone else pregnancy is not a big deal but for you its the most important thing going on in your life.

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 15:54:34

I think if I'd have had the 12 week scan and over the first hurdle I'd be at the front of the queue (me and DH plan on going away at some point) but with this being my first I'm nervous as hell. I'm not daft, I know you drink bottled water, wash my hands, I'm aware of all of it and if I was my SIL I'd be pissed off with me, you've just confirmed why she is. But if I didn't want to receive honest answers why post on this thing hey? My reasons were more for moral support for my decision but (my own fault granted) I just feel more of an arsehole!

ColdSancerre Wed 24-Aug-11 16:00:13

Don't feel an arsehole beans. Make your own decisions in life and stick with it regardless of what others say, such things are up to you. Hope the bleeding is nothing serious.

FWIW I'd never go on overseas in 1st tri now, have my reasons nothing to do with hygiene etc.

Crosshair Wed 24-Aug-11 16:03:09

Its not all bad your feelings abot being an arsehole will soon be replaced with feeling too sick to care. smile

belgo Wed 24-Aug-11 16:03:26

The fact that you have had bleeding during this pregnancy puts a whole new perspective on it - you should have put that in your OP. Have you told your sil this relevant information?

Crosshair Wed 24-Aug-11 16:03:34

*about

Beans1234 Wed 24-Aug-11 16:05:53

yep she knows, but to be fair I did go the the EPU and everything was fine, it still scared the shit out of me though (it was fresh blood not brown spotting)
