I've always been quite anti smoking had a gran who dies of lung cancer, but since I was pregnant with DD and now that I'm out and about with her it really angers me when people are smoking in public areas, if it were up to me I'd ban smoking in all public places ie high streets, door ways to, restaurants, childrens play areas etc and don't even get me started on the bit outside the hospital and make people smoke in smoking rooms or back streets. I got abuse from a woman the other day who came over to speak to DD and puffed her smoke all over her when I asked her not to.

Erm - I think you will find they are pretty much made to smoke away from other people inc restaurants, childrens' play area etc

Has something changed?

Smoking rooms would be brilliant - why has no-one ever thought of tha.....

It's not up to you though is it? Smoking is already banned in enclosed spaces. Walking past someone in the open with a cigarette in their hand is not going to give you lung cancer. However if someone is blowing smoke directly over you or your child then either say something or move away [depending on who was there first].

Yeah that'd be a great idea. Maybe force them to go outside or something.

Report
momobiker · 22/08/2011 16:09

maybe non smokers could use their legs and minds and walk away themselves

I smoke. I like to smoke and I don;t smoke on other people. But if I am outside already, do not expect me to move away if you don't like the smoke!

OK well if we're going to make smokers stay at home then we also need to do the same for:

People who wear Lynx
People who eat egg sandwiches
People who like garlic
People who drink Red Bull
All teenage boys

Yanbu- smoking smells disgusting and there is no need to do it near anyone. I find it particularly repugnant when the sun is shining and you're sitting in the park or at the beach and some one lights up. Do it in your own house if you enjoy it so much

Smoking rooms sound like a great idea! If the smokers smoked in dedicated rooms there wouldn't be people smoking all over the streets and there wouldn't be old cigarette butts all over the place...

Oh wait.

I haven't smoked for about 15 years but I quite like getting a whiff of smoke still!

YABU - and I say that as a non smoker who thinks smoking is digusting. But, it's not against the law to smoke - I would dearly love to walk down the street without having to pass groups of smokers in the street on a fag break, but there you go - that's the law for you.

where would you have them smoke - only in their own home, only in their gardens (but then you mighyt smell some cigarette smoke Shock. Why is a back street any different - is it because you would never sully yourself with walking down a back street? You are suggesting ghettos - and that's not an idea I'm keen on taking forward.

Yep it's horrid when someone stinks of smoke/stale smoke - but YABU/PFB about a random encounter in the street. The woman was rude, but then you might have come over a bit preachy and righteous, who knows?

I shall never moan about smokers in England again having just spent a few days in Paris.

Urgh - they're absolutely everywhere - we all reeked of fags.

We'd find some lovely restaurant and sit outside as weather was beautiful and then be smoked out of our seats and end up the only ones inside!

Back Street Smoker is a good name for a band.

Here we go again...
Smokers smoke outside. You do not rule outside.
I walked the dog along the shore today, there was only one other person there, and I lit up as I always do.
I also take him up the hill behind my house. I wonder who would like to police that.
You ABU and ridiculous.

toniguy · 22/08/2011 16:20

Crosshair- of course smokers would be free to leave their houses. Last time I looked, smoking wasn't a compulsory 24 hour a day activity.

Report
worraliberty · 22/08/2011 16:21

Oh but remember LadyBeagle any smoker who smokes within a mile of anyone else is actually "blowing smoke in their faces"

It's the MN law doncha know Wink

ha smartypants, i never forget seeing a couple with a baby in baby carrier outside a cafe, both happily puffing away, in paris of course!

OP YABU, get over it, smokers are so restricted now you dont have a leg to stand on

Report
GilbonzoTheSecretPsych0Duck · 22/08/2011 16:22

We could have little cages that all the smokers would stand in. When it was full enough it could lower into the ground and then the 'no smoking' sign would go out and they could all light up. When they were finished they could tramp their way out through the sewers (thus ridding themselves of the smell) and climb up through tiny trap doors hidden in alleys. Here there would be a guard who would check that their fags were suitably extinguished and stamp them on the forehead to say they are acceptable to be amongst the proper humans again.

Or we could leave them the fuck alone.

Report
MrsPresley · 22/08/2011 16:23

On the other hand OP why dont you stay indoors and leave the smokers to enjoy their fags!

Insert X and stand well back.....

toniguy - Sorry I assumed they had the right to smoke on a beach ect unless it was not permitted in said area.

YANBU but dont expect smokers to support you. The nicotine hardwires most of them to be selfish sods, and those who havent quit since the ban came in are the worst.

+1 for extending the ban to all public areas, inside or out, with a particular place in hell reserved for smokers who light up next to pregnant women.

I once saw a three year old child eating noodles from a sewer pipe in China - now that disturbed me.

Spot of smoke in a street? I can cope with that.

Wow; YABU. Get the impression that some people want all our very last freedoms taken away from us.
I don't like the smell of cigarette smoke either, but am quite good at avoiding it. I suggest you do likewise.
