There have been some funny freegle wanteds. Some one wanting a car. Some one wanting a PS3 or Xbox 360. Good luck to them is all I think Wink

Grin
you do right.
Where I live, this guy has literally furnished his whole house from freecycle. I see his name on the email alerts and delete them because I just think it's cheeky somehow. Now he's at it for his daughter.
I haven't seen anyone ask for something they're requesting to be delivered though, that's well out of order!

I hate it when people requested me to deliver an item I was offering (particularly when I didn't even have a car!).
Whenever I write an offered now I'm always very specific - stating not to give phone numbers, that I won't be delivering, and that people MUST write the times and dates that they're available to collect. I also add that anyone who doesn't will be instantly ignored - it's amazing how many people still don't.

Freecycle used to be great, now it's just full of greedy fuckwits looking to make a profit from other people's generosity.

On my Freecycle, is a woman asking for a kitten, to be her son's first pet! She asks for it to be male, and perferably neutered, and would like to see how her lad got on with animals!!! I want to report her, but DH told me not to, and that it's no different to responding to 'kittens free to good home' ads in shop windows... but still...

There is also a girl, asking for baby stuff, for her first baby. She wants an electric steriliser (only Avent or Tommee Tippee); baby clothes for both sexes for up to a year; car seat for newborn till 9months, and then the next stage too; 3 stairgates; moses basket & cot & bedding for both; pram/pushchair; baby monitors; highchair; baby bath etc.

She states that she is on benefits, and can't afford to buy new - yet she fails to mention that as a first time mum, on low income, she is entitled to £500 Sure Start Materntity Grant, so what the blazes she will do with that is anyone's guess... best thing - she used her Blackberry to place the ad!!!

We do get the cars, the "need" a sofa - but must be leather, corner, specific colour etc

The moderators shouldn't have let a request for an animal through, if it's not illegal, it's certainly against the rules of Freecycle. Report her.

I have to admit I've grovelled asked for a stairgate on mine recently, but was happy with ANY. I got no responses so surely these ads don't.

We had a 'wanted' recently - 32" tv flatscreen so my daughter can watch CBeebies. (If I had a 32" flatscreen I would keep it!!).

The number of times I think to myself "Oh, just go and buy one like the rest of us" when the 'want' is over the top.

Having said that, though, I have got a wonderful slimline dishwasher (Bosch, nearly new), and a rather expensive, brand new Ab-Lounge which people were 'offering' recently.

We had an animal request last week - someone ahs just moved into a new house with a big garden and "two kittens would complete their home".

My favourite one ever was the person who wanted a harp. They were interested in trying it out as a hobby 9the post made no mention of borrowing). A harp? Do you know how much a harp can be sold for?

Also Moderators were wrong to approve the message for a kitten as there is a policy on Freecycle/Freegle whih doesn't allow pets to be asked for or offered.

Maybe that is what I will do when we move to London next month?

Do you guys think I can equip a whole house for 4 people?

Maybe it should be "The Quintessential Furnish me Freecycle challenge!"

I offered some stuff yesterday and got a polite reply asking if my items were still available. I said yes, and then got a reply saying 'oh good, please deliver them to .....'
I replied 'no'. Cheeky cow.

Recently taken, "unopened bottle of baby oil and a packet of cotton buds"

I kid you not.

Quintessential - you probably could fit your whole house out. My freecycle had an advert that read:

"Help, I've just moved into a new flat and need EVERYTHING. Urgent items include: TV, sofa, dining table (and chairs), beds, bedding, kitchen equipment and cooking utensils. Please help me, I have nothing."

Er, did it not occur to you before you moved that you might need some stuff?! Or perhaps you could do like me and the OH did when we got our first place and sit on hand-me-down fold-up chairs til you've saved the money to buy stuff ...

Goodness, rant over ...

Bread x

We get those too, breadstick. And the ones where someone is 2 days away from giving birth and needs everything. What happened to foresight?

Report
LoopyLoopsTootyFroots · 19/08/2011 10:18

I respond to the impolite ones by telling them that someone with manners has received the item.

acsec · 19/08/2011 10:20

All these people that need this stuff should just hang around the bins of my block of flats - in the year and a half I've lived here you could have kitted out 2 reasonably sized flats with all the perfectly fine sofas, wardrobes, coffee tables, TVs, ovens etc that are left out for the rubbish. I often feel I should take things and put them on freecyle so they don't end up at the tip but I have nowhere to store the stuff.

The nature reserve near me would be a good place to get furniture too. Last week you would struck gold if you were after a dead horse too Hmm

We have just had our freecycle mods chat about our group. We have agreed to add a new clause for ridiculous requests as some are unbelieveable. Someone was asking for a gypsy caravan preferably early 19th century. Designer clothes. A pony. A new mini. We've drafted a declined message just for them.

We all have dreams and aspirations, but they take the piss.

I only respond to wanted posts if they are polite and sound like they won't sell it on.

It really irks me when people join the group and list tons of wanted but never offer items. It ruins the whole ethos.

TheBreadstick /or you could scavenge for furniture in tips and backyards surrounding The Angel (London) in the night.... Or nick tubular steel frames and discarded chicken wire from construction yards, to, erm, construct furniture from.....
Like I did.....

I used to be a Freecycle moderator. I started with a lot of enthusiasm as I truly loved the idea of reducing waste and helping those in need. Freecycle ticked both boxes.

Unfortunately the fact there's no money to put into a proper system and their reliance on email makes the whole thing unmanageable. So those bad apples ruin it for everyone else.

There's little you can do against the troublemakers/scroungers. Ban them and they just set up another account.

Many people already have multiple emails set up so if they see something they want, they'll send multiple messages to maximise their chance.

And some of the people on there just are in it for themselves. In the end a lot of genuine people just end up leaving as like me they tire of the scroungers

Some of the posts I particularly remember aside from the usual requests for laptops on the one I used to moderate were:

WANTED: Car, must have current MOT. Full service history preferred. Ours broke down and now my partner can't get to work.

WANTED: Nintendo DS as my daughter lost hers and we can't afford to buy her a new one. (This was just shortly after they came out)

And my personal favourite:

WANTED: Kid's sandpit, as seen in Argos catalogue page xxx item 3. (So not just any sandpit....but THAT exact one cos Freecycle is like a magic argos catalogue!)
