I know that sounds thick, its spent so people can get to work......

but its seems to be so expensive Shock

I heard on the news someone said their yearly ticket was over £5k!!

what sort of journey would that entail, and about how long would it be for {the journey I mean}

£5k is more than I earn in a yr................

I don't mind being corrected but that works out about £18 per working day. I spend £10 a day on diesel.

Well when it's either that or live in London it can still work out cheaper than the increase in rent/mortgage.

Breaking down to roughly £100 a week so £25 a day.

Had a friend who travelled from south coast to London and then tube to work daily - I think he spent around that. Obviously he had a position that enabled him to spend that amount of money. I was quite horrified by the amount spent on commuting. That coupled with the amount of time per week spent on public transport finally convinced him to give it all up and take a pay cut and work locally. Yes, it sounds horrendous but breaking it down like that it seems perfectly logical to have to spend it

I think IIRC the person spending so much was travelling somewhere to London in a hour and a half train journey, 5 days a week I guess

I just thought poor bugger, what a rip

Mine is £4,750 annually I think (I pay monthly as holidays mean it isn't worth getting a an annual). That's a 30-50 min journey and all zones travel card in London for buses and tube.

12 years ago when I went from Farnborough to London I think my season ticket was around £4k and no guarentee of a seat of course Sad

My dh,s is that, travel in from east Anglian to London each day about 1 and 1/2 hrs each way door to door. About £4750 per yr. Luckily we can spread the coast with a season ticket loan through his work.

Slight improvement than when I used to do it as well !

I would assume the average London wage is much higher than the rest of the country, and also that people only do the commute if they're better off than getting a job locally.

I'm just over £4k per year on public transport, but would be over £5k in petrol, were I to drive. Just got to go where you can find work in your field, and suck it up.... ;( Still clear way more than when I was on ESA!
