No, but I have witnessed 2 sisters chatting if that counts - but apparently they knew who each other were.

Yes I have, but I think it was posted passive-agressively in the knowledge that the 'friend' in question might see it

Yes. It's happened quite a few times.

Oh really? Ive never seen it happen. Sometimes I see people bitching about their in-laws and they have public profiles with pics up.

If a certain poster's bonkers SIL ever appeared to post, my children would survive by eating my flesh as I obsessively hit F5.

there was a pretend-outing on here a few weeks ago but it turned out just to be a troll with sockpuppets. There was too much drama in too short a period of time for it to be true.

Xenia outs herself fairly regularly too but I think she does it on purpose Grin

Oh God yes, if that SIL appears it's every man for himself as far as I'm concerned.

I lurk a lot on SIL threads. Just In Case.

No, but I posted on another board where someone posted about being suspicious of the relationship that her husband had with another woman and the other woman posted and ripped the OP to shreds.

Sorry I mean that I posted on a different website forum, not a different Mumsnet board

Me too. I saw one the other day: "SIL has been so daft" or something and I pounced on it!

Report
BoysRusxxx · 18/08/2011 21:28

Oh God Gwen, thats insane!!

I love a good SIL thread myself for some reason.

Infestious, was it worth the pounce???

I witnessed an outing on here once, probably a couple of years ago. It was horrible - I felt my cheeks burning as I read it. The OP was really slagging off a friend of hers. Can't remember all of the details, but it was pretty bitchy stuff. The friend then turns up and says thanks a lot - turns out the OP introduced her friend to MN, thought she didn't really use it and then got caught out. Thread got deleted pretty quickly.

I got stalked on here and all my posts read by a particularly unpleasant relative. Still makes my skin crawl knowing she's read some of my inner most feelings.

Oh no norks thats terrible.

How did you find out relative knew you on here?

I use another forum, a much smaller one and I have figured out I know a few people on there but i would never repeat anything i read on there to anyone. Im not that close to them.

I had a very particular set of events happen to me and my threads were pretty high traffic. This person knew I posted on here so she pretty quickly found me. She called me and told me, expecting me to apologise for a couple of things I had said about her. I told her I had nothing to apologise for and that she must be a pretty sad person to have read my MN history. Everyone in rl who knows us is disgusted by her behaviour.

I've been on the opposite end of this and found posts about me (or a highly exaggerated version of me anyway). I think if people are unpleasant about their friends and relatives in such a public arena, and they make themselves identifiable, then they need to be prepared for the consequences. Reading MN isn't like poking around in a secret diary, you've put your innermost thoughts up there for the entire world to see and if you've attached enough personal info to them that the entire world can guess who you are then that is something you need to live with.

GreatNorksOfFire · 18/08/2011 22:17

Pelvic, in a way I agree with you. MN is not a secret diary, far from it.

But life changes. What can be a throw away comment about someone on one thread can then be taken out of context when your world suddenly collapses, you turn to MN for help and unwittingly make your self identifiable.

I haven't posted anything on here that I really mind people seeing BUT my mnet identity is still sort of private. My bf is on here and she 'found' me and I 'found' her and that's fine. There are two other people I know on here who don't know afaik who I am and I have never mentioned it to them because I worry it would be embarassing all round.
What did hugely piss me off though was when somebody I knew from a 'group' thread and who we had worked out had a friend in common with me then told that friend my mnet name. Afaik she din't mention her own Hmm Now I can understand her saying 'oh X is on there too' but WHY would you say 'X is on there called Baskingshark'? So now I'm namechanging and well and truly pissed off about it!

Quite a few times actually... remember the women and children in the restaurant thread?

and the hammer attack?

and the fishy exposé?

and the minor lib dem love triangle affair?

I have recognised 2 people that I know in RL on here, never said anything to them and not gone looking for their history or anything though. I met them initially through a different site then went on to meet in RL. We aren't at all close. One has the same username as on the other forum and the other has posted things that have happened on here and on FB on the same day, and has described her family etc so I know it's definitely her. I would never tell them, mention it on here or out them to anyone else though. I guess I might feel differently if they ever said anything about me, but I'm sure they wouldn't, I barely know them really.

Would probably be a different story if I ever saw ex-SIL or ex-MIL on here though!
