I assume they try and select students that are almost guaranteed to have achieved their grades, but I've witnessed those that don't as well. Grim.

I was asked to come in and open mine for the newspapers (this was about 12 years ago though). I think there were 4 of us, all with the same grades. The head of year called us the afternoon before to ask us to come in early so I presume they had already seen them and selected the students they wanted.

I would assume it is staged. The school has already seen the results (the night before) & put them into the envelopes. They have probably telephoned certain students to ask them to come in early for the photocall - this is what my school did anyway.

A school would not allow students to be humiliated.
E.g. A student expecting 'a' grades... Open the envolope... Oh look you've got 'e' grades!!!
Schools get the results the day before.

The teachers already know the results. It's not people who are "almost guaranteed" - they have got their grades.

If you get phoned up to be on the radio or to go in early to be in a picture they don't tell you, but it is accepted that you have got what you wanted.

Actually, was anyone watching BBC1 Breakfast about 7.15/30 this morning? There was one girl, who was slightly on the chubby side. As the presenter was ending the short interview with her I'm convinced I heard her say "well, good luck, 'chubs'" (the girl's name sounded nothing like 'chubs')

DH knew what all his students had yesterday......now he is off congratulating/consoling them this morning as they collect them. Only 14% have opted to recieve theirs online at his school.

YANBU I watched some this morning on Daybreak. I had an inkling they only allowed it with students that got all the grades expected or 6 A's! and I'm glad to hear they are.

I wouldn't want anyone to be humiliated on live TV, that's just cruel.

I did an AS level Psychology about 4 years ago very mature student. I got an A - my first ever in my life - I wish that had been broadcast on live TV

Article in the FT today by its' education editor. Apparently Bedales e-mails him pictures of attractive girls he may want to have photographed with their results. Badminton rang him up to tell him this year's girls are 'beautiful' in order to tempt him to photograph them. Another school invited him to their sports day so he could see them in the flesh to select girls for photos on results day. fortunately all these were ignored and outed in this article. Pretty grim stuff.

We all know what it feels like to get the envelope and open it. We all know either the joy or disappointment (sometimes both) of seeing the grades.

We don't need to see it happening!

I don't like it at all.

always gets me how its the terribly attractive girls in the strappiest tops that get shown as well! My school yeargroup got the front page of the Telegraph our GCSE year, all crowded round the deputy head hugging him and cheering. He was the scariest teacher in the school and ordinarily you ran in the opposite direction when you saw him coming! Of course its all staged - but most TV is like that - they make what will be good TV, not necessarily the best / most honest version of whatever. Would the Jeremy Kyle show get its viewing figures if everyone sat around in smart clothes quietly expressing their feelings in words of more than one syllabul? (sorry, wandered off the point - as you were!)

And a proud day for mums, dads, aunts, uncles, friends....all over the country!

I really feel for the kids who didn't make the grades that they needed....and who will be bitterly dissapointed as a result

My dd didn't get anything like she should have done with various excuses reasons. I just hope she looks carefully at her options now.....

I am glad IABU but Ive definitely seen a disappointed student opening theirs, so they must've thrown in a dud to balance it out
