AIBU?

7yo dd was told at swimming pool to wear the top part of her bikini

I sent the kids to a holiday club today where they have a pool. They were wearing the bottom part of a bikini and the 7yo (very skinny as well) was told to wear the top part of her bikini tomorrow. I think that's just weird and I'm feeling a bit upset about it. AIBU?

I think it is weird that your 7 year old has a bikini at all. Why not get her a proper swimming costume?

Depends really on you take on whether 7 years old boys should use the men's changing rooms?.

Report
worraliberty · 15/08/2011 21:50

I suppose it depends on why they have that rule. Did you ask them?

Personally I think the most stupid rule now is that you can't photograph your kids enjoying themselves in the bloody pool.

World's gone mad Hmm

What oakmaiden said. Your DD is seven - why on earth does she have a bikini?

Im not sure what her being skinny has to do with it? Confused

Did they say why they want her to wear the top? Although tbh I am with oakmaiden and not a fan of bikinis for young girls anyway, swimsuits are much more appropriate IMO

a little bit.
why didn't you give her both parts to wear to start with?
i think a lot of 7 year olds would be starting to get to the point of wanting to cover themselves up, but realise that doens't apply to all

i dunno, i think when you are in charge of your child on the beach/pool whatever and you let them play naked, or only in pants/bikini bottoms that's fine. generally i have no issue at all with small children and nakedness

however, in a club i can see that they may feel they have to insist on children covering up to protect themselves from accusations of having semi-naked young girls prancing around them.

silly, but if you're entrusting them to a club then you have to stick to their rules i think.

I would rather see a 7 year old with just pants on than a bikini suggesting she has tits to cover up in the first place. I find it truely shocking That she was asked. I must say I hate seeing pre/pubesent kids in bikinis.

i had a bikini in the 70s hardly playboy attire Hmm

i think it's a bit of an odd rule too, a bit political correctness gawn maaaddd

I'm with you. I had a bikini but only ever wore the bottoms until I had something to put in the top bit and it never seemed odd. You can't buy just the bottoms for girls once they're out of nappies and you should be able to. Why should she cover her top half? It's insane.

What has her being skinny got to do with it?? And whats wrong with swimsuits?

7 year old boys wear trunks so why shouldn't 7 year old girls just wear the bottom bit of their bikini?

YANBU op, but I think I'd go long with it to avoid confrontation (that's probably just me though!)

Btw, who asked her to do this? Was it the staff from the holiday club?

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/08/2011 21:55

Probably just a general rule as nowadays girls as young as 7 are developing breasts so easier to make it a blanket thing.

Two issues here

7 year old in a bikini - OMG

7 year old wearing only half of said bikini? WTF OMG

Yabu

I think they were right to ask her to wear the top half. Not so much because she herself was inappropriately dressed without it but because, if they let her wear just the bottom half, they have to start making judgement calls on age or degree of development at which it stops being ok. That would be embarrassing and potentially inappropriate for them.

MrsCampbellBlack · 15/08/2011 21:55

I assumed the skinny comment was to say she wasn't developing as yet.

Is it a bra type bikini or a tankini?
dd (5) has a tankini but would always wear the top with it anyway.
I think the club are probably just being overprotective but would stick to their rules.

I agree with thisisyesterday. I think the club probably needs to have rules.

I also hate bikinis on little girls. They are totally wrong and an all in one swimsuit is much more appropriate.

Any age, bikini, why not? They're not all strumpet attire! < rechecks Boden catalogue >

Yes, it's a shame that if she's hitherto unselfconscious she's being told to cover up. But if the club is in loco parentis and that is what they've decided, then that's what you have to go with. It'll matter far less to her than To you, and probably not at all if you stay breezy and just do it.

I'd be a bit angry too - can't see the problem and why they would insist that she wears it. She hasn't got boobs for Gods sake!
Oakmaiden my 5 year old has a bikini - I don't see anything wrong with it. She's not parading around in high heels, and swinging tassles on her nipples, in a thong, fgs!!!

My DD 5 year old has a Tankini and bottoms- as its easier than the one piece she had last year. She can go to the loo easily if need be - most of her swim class have similar or bikini's - I assume for similar reasons.

Everyone wears the tops though - never occurred to me or DD not to put both on.

All I can suggest is that you ask the reason or just comply to avid embarrassing your DD.

i also had a bikini as a child. but i wore both parts of it... cos, why wouldn't you??
i just would automatically have used both bits rather than makiing a conscious decision to go "topless" as it were...
