its because they are funny apparently women are suckers for men who are funny and is doesnt matter if they are not all that because we are not as shallow apparently.

everyone has different tastes though. The guy in the 1st pic isn't too bad and i'd love dp to have a SOH like Doug in KoQ :)

Because in general they're the talent and vehicle for the show, and in the case of King of Queens the writer I think. People don't generally like laughing at athletic good looking men, fat men are the funny ones for the most part and middle america loves a lower-middle class fat man slaving away at his job.
Also seth rogen has been helped hugely by the fact that he is basically Judd Apatow 20 yrs younger and so has been used in everything he makes as his on screen self.

It's a bit of a shallow attitude you have there, OP. Most women I know go for intelligence, personality and humour first, looks are just a bonus.

Report
mayorquimby · 12/08/2011 20:13

Plus it tends to work in reverse also. If the women are the focus of the show and the driving factor then their on screen partners will tend to be good looking and not as fleshed out.
Off the top of my head your one in Bridesmaids was sleeping with Don Draper (Don Draper for gods sakes), Tina Fey had Matt Damon and Don Draper in 30 rock and bar the pretty burnette in SATC I'd imagine that the rest of the cast had a fair amount of partners who were significantly better looking than them.

Report
LolaRennt · 12/08/2011 20:19

Tina Fey is pretty though- I think..

I don't know I just think they should be with partners that they would probably have in real life. The way Roseann had John Goodman. I don't think I'm being shallow as such..just that it seems pretty biased to men having unbelievably attractive women throwing themselves at them and it makes me feel a bit sick. I will give you the entire cast of SATC though.. can't see the appeal of any of those women myself

Oh Tine fey is definitely pretty, my gf is a bit worried about my obsession with her, but there's no way I'd class her as stunning etc., she's just quite attractive and probably not on the same level as Matt Damon or Don Draper would be for women.
It's just a fact of marketing really. For the most part these will be middle of the road comedies that nobody is overly invested in or else heavily gender biased. So if it's female driven the men will quite often not be of great relevance/ fleshed out characters so looks become more important a criteria then they will for the female characters who will be there to carry the show as this is what execs think the audience want and they may very well be right ( i don't know enough about the analysis of demographics)
For men it's generally thought that they will relate/root for the man and he'll be the source of their comedy and in that case having a few pretty women around won't hurt.
Not saying this is right, but it tends to be the lazy stereotype which tv shows aim for and it must be because it works.
As I say it is quite often driven by who the talent/creator is. And if you look at network stuff like HBO/Showtime it isn't as prevelant really as they tend to produce larger scale productions which span multiple storylines so rely on fleshing out more characters thus requiring talent as well as looks. In those productions there is not normally such a wide gap in terms of looks, either everyone is gorgeous (a la trueblood) because it is escapism tv or else they will puposely escue focus on looks for some relationships to add realism (The WIre/Deadwood etc.)

You win. That was a much more intelligent answer than my OP of: I wish the ugly men didn't have a pretty girlfriends. Grin

Jim Belushi is god awful though

Well it's all pop-psychology/sleep deprived ramblings. I'm sure there's a million examples which completely contradict what I've just posted and someone will be along to blow my theory out of the water soon because tbf your original post is probably spot on. It's not nearly as prevelant to see a woman of relative attractivness to the guy from king of queens with a man who'd be considered as hot as his wife, so there's definitely something to it and it (despite my last post) it would seem counter-intuitive to claim otherwise.
I do think it's to do with who drives the shows though as it is usually for comedies. Men tend to be bigger comic draws then women so have more shows and movies built around them. As they're the draw they have to be in it regardless of how good looking they are. After that I'm pretty sure the producers don't want to waste any screen time on an ugly person where a good looking one would do.

Still be virgins?

That's rather nasty.

No, I don't think they would be virgins in real life.

If they can make out that scary old Sarah-Jessica Parker gets lots of boyfriends in Sex & the City then John Belushi can get the girl in his films.

mayorquimby · 12/08/2011 21:10

yup. I've managed to disagree with you. Then once I gained your approval I turned around and disagreed with both myself and your agreement with me, thus agreeing with your original post that I disagreed with.
In my defence I have exams monday so haven't slept much in weeks and my head is melted.
Can I go back to day dreaming about tina fey now?

Look at Ian Beale in Eastenders. He's had some right corkers. And Tony Hutcheson in Hollyoaks is the King Of Punching Above His Weight.

I don't fancy any of those listed so far, but I had a very soft spot for James Belushi's brother - John. I found him tres amusing (Blues Brothers, Animal House, etc) but he also seemed to have an air of vulnerability about him.

O dear, it seems that my Achilles heel may be a man with a razor sharp sense of humour who needs his ego boosting.

Otherwise, I can't see myself clinging doe-eyed to the arm of a guy I found unattractive just because he was famous - although I might make an exception if he was rich as Croesus Grin

Maybe not virgins but not beating them off with a stick either. Personality only gets you so far - you can't polish a turd!

Whatmeworry, do you know all my friends, then? Hmm

Might be bollocks in your shallow world, but not mine. Or maybe my female friends are just a bit more intelligent than yours.

Report
mayorquimby · 12/08/2011 21:57

Not sure about fanciability but it's an undeniable truth that james belushi's career is equal parts down to his brothers talent and also an unmitigated failure in terms of quality because when compared to it.

Clearly to make your shining shit wit shine even more.

If this was a thread laying into the looks of (successful, talented and intelligent) women, I think it wouldn't be quite so light hearted.

Oh simmer down, Ann. On threads that routinely slate women's appearances, it is often said "we never rip the men to shreds"

Well, here we are.
