To fill *thank you*birthday party bags with sweets, or not.

In short, yesterday me and dd went to the supermarket to buy party bag fillers(sweets and small pinnate toys) for her upcoming birthday party.
In the sweet section we kept picking and filling the basket with sweets, no abnormal amount, when with met a woman with her dd(little older then mine) giving us very disapproving looks, followed by lot's tuts, tuts, I felt very embarrassed, and now question if I should put those sweets in the thank you bags, will there be a lot of disapproval from dd's friends parents, too?
Should bags be filled with healthier staff? Am I doing the right thing?

Yanbu, the whole point of party bags is to fill them with sweets, plastic crap and whistle that make a horrible noise. :) Very rarely have my dd's been given a part bag that didn't have any sweets in it.

When I was a kid, party bags were filled with sweets, both given out and received. Now I have a kid, party bags are filled with sweets, both given and received. It's tradition. Who would you rather please? The parent or the child. Anyway, it's your child, do it the way you want. Hope your dd has a lovely birthday.

That's waht party bags are for! I'd have been a bit at sweets in a two year olds party bag but any age over about three is ok I think and if parents are worried by them they can always ration them over a few days. Mine love all the rubbish and tut they get in party bags. They'd be gutted if they got something healthy or educational!!

Precisely sharney I want the children to enjoy the day, so yes I would rather please the kids, surely responsibility of a parent is to decide how those sweets should be consumed, but not putting sweets in the bags, as this silly mare was suggesting with her tuts and evil looks, it's not on, imagine the disappointment of children.

When they were little, I used to keep the sweets in a separate goody box and let the parents grab some for the kids on the way out of the party. I hate it when a goody bag is snatched and inspected before letting the kids have them!

I don't like too many sweets in a party bag, but hey it's a party, and you are completely right that it is the parents responsibility, so DS gets to eat some and the rest go in a "treat jar" for another time. Are you sure she was tutting and giving you the evil eye? That seems like a really rude, weird thing to do to someone else in the supermarket?

Actually one of my kids once got a party bag with a cereal bar in it . Can't remember which one, but it was eaten no problem!

Mine are 5 and 3. Happy for either to receive a bag of sweets, but 3yo probably wouldn't eat all of them. 5yo would eat enough for both though.

You get a lot of it around here, "tuts, tuts", for a lot of things in a very obvious way. Among sweets, I have put some nice stationery things, pencil, writing pad, dd and her mates are 5, so not too young for lot's yum, yum sweets.
I am sure they will have a wonderful day, and going by what all of you said, I am sure parents will be cool about the sweets.

DD once received a party bag with 9 bars of chocolate (including Milky Ways and Mars bars) and one toy. At the time this was more than she would eat in a whole year!

Best bags IMHO have a nice mix of noisy toys, pencils, sweets and balloons.

I had a thread on here a while ago about a woman tutting and moaning to her husband because I was buying DD juice with her meal.

Party bags are the best thing about birthday parties....for mummy. Bag goes in the cupboard for treats, kid forgets, mummy gets sweets, everyone's a winner!

Last year when dd was 4 as a 'thank you for coming' thing she got a photo of a birthday boy from the actual party, all the other children have been cut out from the photo, and card read something along the lines" thank you for coming, I really liked the gift you got for me", I didn't see anything wrong with it, little odd perhaps, but dd was really disappointed, gutted, commented on it very vocally I remember.

I save up all the little toys / colouring books / bubbles in a big box and they get brought out on special days out or when we go to restaurants.

I eat the chocolate.
