My mum had a hysterectomy yesterday at a london hospital in day surgery

She was very ill afterward in recovery vomiting and in excrutiating pain, my mum overheard a nurse saying that my mum was to be discharged and another nurse arguing that she was too ill to be discharged. The nurse then told my mum who was drugged up on morphine and had just had surgery .. To get herself dressed and to call her partner to pick her up and take her away. my mum couldnt reach her phone/belongings the nurse grudgingly passed them to her and left her to dress herself

She was given no care plan, and basically kicked out of the hospital

I arrived at my mums house this morning (I couldnt come last night as I couldnt leave dc's) she was white as a ghost, shaking in agony
she was unable to pass urine the hospital when we called told her to make a dr's appt !
I insisted that she be taken to A and E

they had to catherterise her in hospital, her bladder was so full the nurse was so shocked at A and E and now she has an infection and is upstairs shaking in pain.

I cant beleive that the nurses would discharge someone who is in so much pain, with so little care or empathy.
I feel really devastated at how my mum has been treated.

I was just wondering is it normal for people to be discharged in states like this??

I think you need to make an official complaint immediately. And do not let them discharge her until she is well again. Let the doctors caring for her now know that you are making a complaint, too.

They usually discharge with the catheter in. It isn't unusual to discharge anyone after surgery full of morphine, but i think that sometimes it is dangerous. The after care plan should have been decided on before the surgery, but of course can be changed, if needed.

The hospital should be ashamed and you should complain.

However, my brother was discharged from hospital with a very very serious injury - he was 17 and my mum had briefly gone home to get him some stuff when suddenly, he turned up at the doorstep with an 18yo friend who had visited him and been asked by the hospital to take my brother away. As soon as my mum's back was turned, they discharged a child. He was white a sheet, struggling to stand, peeing blood and was readmitted that day onto another ward. I think your mum's experience is utterly terrible, but unfortunately relatively common.

we took her to A and E this morning and they sent her home with a catheter, she is at home. My step dad called to find out what procedures they had carried out, as they gave no information to him when he picked her up.
They informed him it is standard practice to release a patient 6hrs after surgery. My mum told me she was vomiting as they discharged her and they just handed her 2 paper bowls and sent her on her way.

She said the lady opposite on the ward was buzzing for help and the nurses were stood outside just chatting and ignoring the patients.
I am going to call PALS inthe morning and make a complaint.

Nursing is supposed to be a caring profession I am disgusted with my mums treatment.

I agree with everyone else, get your mums permission to write a letter of complaint on her behalf (assuming she isn't in a fit state to do so herself) and they have to investigate.

I know our local hospital have the complaints procedure on the website with the details of who to complain to, if not PALS will be able to inform you.

Patients having day case procedures are normally fine to be discharged 4h after surgery - there are criteria for suitability including having access to a telephone, transport and a responsible adult to stay with them for a further 24h.

A hysterectomy is not a day case procedure!

Are you sure it was definitely a hysterectomy and not a hysteroscopy? (which is a day case). If the latter then while the nurses were being unreasonable in not getting her reviewed with a potential for admission, it would be standard to go home same day. If the former then how on earth did she get booked as a day case?!

A hysterectomy is not a day case surgical procedure AFAIK it's major abdominal surgery. Are you quite sure that's why she had? Maybe a hysteroscopy?

In any case, patient's I believe normally go home with the catheter in unless they have demonstrated they are capable of passing urine freely. You did right to take her to A and E and she should complain if she feels she was treated badly or discharged too early.

I hope it wasn't my hospital.
