perhaps if fb and twitter was closed for a couple of days, not saing forever, thne things would die down a bit and the police would be able to regain control.

what would this achieve???

worraliberty Mon 08-Aug-11 23:47:57

They'd just use other websites I'm sure

aleene Mon 08-Aug-11 23:48:07

Can they even do that? and I don't think it would make much difference.

worraliberty Mon 08-Aug-11 23:48:48

No they can't do that. They're not even British websites

Empusa Mon 08-Aug-11 23:48:55

You do know they've been using their mobiles to organise this right?

And no, they can't

SybilBeddows Mon 08-Aug-11 23:49:09

they said on the news earlier it was now being coordinated via Blackberry messaging so it was private between friends rather than on Twitter.

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:49:20

yes but theres no other website that are THAT HUGE

Pandemoniaa Mon 08-Aug-11 23:49:23

No. I don't want any government thinking it can overtly control the internet in the way you suggest.

GypsyMoth Mon 08-Aug-11 23:49:35

they have got loudspeakers down there to communicate with, soo it would still happen

Meglet Mon 08-Aug-11 23:50:08

they're just texting each other AFAIK.

BitOfFun Mon 08-Aug-11 23:50:52

Do we want to live in a totalitarian state? Not really.

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:51:08

i know they are american website, but i wondered if it was possible to stop people in the uk connceting to them, sort of cut the uk off from them for a couple of days, if that is even pysically possible.

Empusa Mon 08-Aug-11 23:51:31

No. It isn't. Thank fuck.

Macaroona Mon 08-Aug-11 23:52:07

They were using BBM, and it has been temporarily disabled apparently.

AnyFucker Mon 08-Aug-11 23:52:08

bloody hell, no

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:52:23

i know it would still happen, via txt loadspeackers whatever but it might take the momentum out of it if you know what i mean at all

Empusa Mon 08-Aug-11 23:52:52

Have heard Blackberry are meant to be helping police as much as they can. SO well done Blackberry.

squeakytoy Mon 08-Aug-11 23:53:22

If the scum can use social media to plan their movements, it makes it a lot easier for the authorities to keep an eye on them. Shutting it down would just send it underground and make it harder to deal with. IMO.

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:53:28

yes that is good of blackberry.

MollieO Mon 08-Aug-11 23:53:34

They are using BBM so nothing to do with fb or twitter. I'd be delighted if they closed the BB network for a few days. RIM are co-operating with the police.

reelingintheyears Mon 08-Aug-11 23:54:00

Didn't the Egyptians shut down FB and twitter during the riots there?

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:54:07

good point sueakytoy

Pandemoniaa Mon 08-Aug-11 23:54:13

Thank fuck indeed. We might live under an unelected coalition of utter cunts but at least they aren't attempting to impose the sort of totalitarianism so beloved of unacceptable regimes elsewhere in the world. Nobody tells me I can or can't use Facebook, Twitter, or any other website.

carriedababi Mon 08-Aug-11 23:54:39

i don't know reeling
