This is not aibu. more traffic here.

Just received a letter through the post with my full name and address from News Group Newspaper. The message is below.

My question is, how the fuck did they get my name and address? I don't read the sun and I have never registered my details with them. I admit, I did have a look at their site on that day (it had been hacked and reporting Rupert Murdoch had killed himself) BUT I was literally on there for about a minute. How did they get my full name and address?

Here is the message from the letter

Dear my full name

I am writing to you on behalf of News Group Newspapers (NGN) – publisher of The Sun and former publisher of the News of the World.

As you may be aware on July 19th The Sun website was subject to an organised criminal attack. It has now come to our attention that some customer information from competitions and polls was breached as part of this attack. Details vary, but could include name, address, date of birth, email and phone numbers. No financial or password information was compromised.

We are contacting you because we believe that information that you submitted to us could have been accessed, and may be published online by the group responsible. We are working closely with the Police and the Information Commissioner's Office to ensure that all steps are taken to retrieve the files involved.

We regret that we've not been able to stop this incident from happening. We'll update you directly if there are further developments related to your specific data. We would advise as a precaution to take extra care when dealing with contact from third parties if they are unknown to you.

In the meantime if you have any questions or require any further information, please contact us at or on 0207 8601129.

Chris Duncan
Director of Customer Management

Sounds like you should contact the number provided. Could be that, even though you've never registered directly with the Sun, you've registered with something linked to the Sun that you're unaware of.

Thanks. I tried calling them but gave up after waiting over 10 mins. Great another thing to worry about today.

Your name and address are presumably on the electoral roll so I wouldn't get too stressed about them being published. If they don't have your credit card details then I can't see that anything terrible is going to happen.

Thanks Zillion, you're probably right. I just wanted to hear if anyone else had received a letter from them

I misread the letter as I was still sleepy and thought it had something to do with them hacking me, haha. I was thinking yay -I'm in the money. Sue them. Dreamt about holidays and all sorts.

If you've entered a competition with either them or with News International (Sunday Times, The Times or Sunday Times Travel Magazine) then they will have your details.
