not to peel mushrooms?

OK if they're those great big ones, I'd peel them, especially if the skin was looking a bit manky. But if they're just normal sized, fairly fresh mushrooms, then I'd just give them a rinse, maybe cut of a bit of the stem and use them.

My mother thinks this is disgusting practice, especially as mushrooms are grown in horse manure.

I'm the same.

Big ones yes, small ones not worth the fuss

MissPenteuth Sun 07-Aug-11 18:10:20

I've never peeled a mushroom in my life. I give them a good rinse, and scrape any stubborn mank off with my fingernail.

belgo Sun 07-Aug-11 18:10:26

I wipe them with a a cloth and rinse them. I never peel them.

Are you supposed to wash them then?

Oooops... blush

supadupapupascupa Sun 07-Aug-11 18:12:09

i think you are meant to just wipe them.....

MardyBra Sun 07-Aug-11 18:12:13

dee - my DH doesn't usually wash them, unless I get my hands on them first. I thought I'd best not mention that to DM.

catgirl1976 Sun 07-Aug-11 18:12:54

I don't peel them. I don't always wash them either blush I tend to think cooking will kill anything nasty

MardyBra Sun 07-Aug-11 18:13:51

I asked DM how she manages with button mushrooms, and she tends to avoid these!

2littlegreenmonkeys Sun 07-Aug-11 18:14:09

I'm with MissPenteuth.

Never in my life have I peeled a mushroom. My MIL does though.

HeavyHeidi Sun 07-Aug-11 18:35:52

There are certain types of wild mushrooms (Suillus granulatus for example) that you should peel, but as UK is such a mushroom-phobic country, it's unlikely that most people would ever come in contact with those. No need to peel the supermarket ones.
You should not wash mushrooms though, they soak up too much water. Just wipe. A little horse shit never hurt anybody grin

HopeForTheBest Sun 07-Aug-11 18:38:03

They are not grown in horse manure.

And no YANBU. Never peeled or washed a mushroom in my life and do not intend to start now grin

MardyBra Sun 07-Aug-11 18:40:44

Hey - this must be my first AIBU where nobody thinks I am being unreasonable....!

HowToLookGoodGlaikit Sun 07-Aug-11 18:42:30

Peeling a mushroom? grin I have never done this! Nor washed, as they are grown in clean soil.

mrspnut Sun 07-Aug-11 18:44:27

My life is far too short to be peeling mushrooms, I never wash them either.

SandStorm Sun 07-Aug-11 18:45:34

Who on earth peels mushrooms? I have never heard of this practice in my life.

Punkatheart Sun 07-Aug-11 18:47:05

You shouldn't wash them - they absorb water and go squishy. Wipe.

Chandon Sun 07-Aug-11 18:51:08

I wipe the with a wet (ish) tea towel. Then throw towel in laundry.

Pan Sun 07-Aug-11 18:52:02

I peel them - open and buttons. Never wash them for the squidgy reason.

FabbyChic Sun 07-Aug-11 18:52:44

I don't even rinse them I cook them from the pack.

lastonetoleaveturnoutthelights Sun 07-Aug-11 18:53:38

My goodness what a strange practice, peeling mushrooms! I've never heard of that in my life.

I also was always taught not to wash them, as they go a little mushy.

MrsKravitz Sun 07-Aug-11 18:53:41

Ive never peeled them either

superjobee Sun 07-Aug-11 18:54:42

never heard of it and i dont wash or wipe them either blush we buy a wee punnet of them, chop them up into pieces and chuck them in everything whatever we are cooking grin

Pan Sun 07-Aug-11 18:55:42

nothing strange at all. gets all of the outside shit and chemicals off the little fellas, and avoids washing them. Learned this from a proff. chef.

PinkSchmoo Sun 07-Aug-11 18:57:12

Don't wash them out of pure laziness. I usually flick of the larger bits of muck but not always. And DH tells me I'm obsessively clean (he doesn't know about my dirty mushroom habit though).
